(Edited for further explanation and clarification on tags)

I’m still finding a large number of New York deer hunters very confused on the rules of earning your second buck tag.

Here is how the DEC explains earn a buck:

Earn-a-2nd-Buck system

All hunters will now receive a first Antlered Deer Tag upon hunting license purchase, which can be used during any season with appropriate privileges), except the September antlerless deer season. Hunters who harvest and report an antlerless deer using a valid antlerless deer tag (DMP, Bow/Muzzleloader Antlerless Deer Tag, Deer Management Assistance Program Tag, etc.) will now be eligible to receive a second Antlered Deer Tag, which can be used during those same seasons. Hunters who purchase bowhunting and muzzleloading privileges will now receive a Bow/Muzzleloader Antlerless Deer Tag for each privilege.

So in other words when you go to purchase your tags, whether it be online or in store if you are a bowhunter or hunt with muzzleloader you will now receive buck tag(1) instead of an either s*x tag AND you will receive two (2) antlerless Bow/muzz tags that can be used in all of New York State. (Excluding those WMUs that prohibit hunting deer).
To earn your buck tag(2) (previously known as regular season tag) you MUST harvest a doe. Now, if you were to harvest a doe on October 1, as soon as you report that doe you can receive your second buck tag. Which could be used as soon as you get it.
If you have access to the Internet via a smart/computer AND printer you can report your doe harvest and then get your second buck tag right then and there, print it out and go back hunting.

If you are NOT a bow hunter or crossbow hunter or muzzleloader hunter, opening day of regular season you will be hunting with your DMPs and buck tag (1) in tow.
If for instance. On opening day of regular season first thing in the morning, a big mature doe walks in front of you and you harvest her. As soon as you report that doe you are now eligible for your buck tag(2). So as a gun hunter, this means you can now harvest two(2) bucks during REGULAR season.

When you purchase your NYS big game license these are the tags you get:

Bow hunting/Muzzleloader privilege - Antlerless X2, Antlered deer ( #1), Bear, DMPs X2(Lotto options as usual) DMPs X2(unlimited WMUs)

Regular Season(Firearms) privilege - Antlered deer ( #1), Bear, DMPs X2(Lotto options as usual) DMPs X2(unlimited WMUs)

If you don’t draw DMPs on limited DMP WMU’s for first and second choice you WILL get two in UNLIMITED WMUs on the 2nd choice of 2 DMPs. This 2nd round is for UNLIMITED ONLY WMUs. You can’t re-choose from limited WMU options. You can now have unlimited DMPs signed over.

Hopefully this information helps you understand the earn a buck system better.

Thanks for reading, Kate.

We want to thank all of the members that showed up to the work party yesterday. The riverside/shoreline is looking good and the range is ready to go with new target holders and all cleaned up.

One thing to mention is we are no longer allowing staples to be used on the target holders on the rifle range. We have provided push pins to use. Please remove your targets when done and return the push pins to the range house. A staple gun will be allowed on the pistol range as the holders are wooden. A couple of members made new target holders and bases for the pistol range and are inside the pistol room for you to set up where you'd like on the pistol range.

Please remember no targets are to be placed in the painted areas of the target holders and DO NOT place anything like clays or cans etc on top of the target holders. We are ordeing some metal gong targets for the range next week. :)

Quite honestly, the range was the best we've seen it after a winter of use in quite sometime. Thank you!! :)

Just a heads up .... for those needing an orientation or key swaps, Dean will be at the club tomorrow on the riverside from 11am until 6pm. If you are able to help out, the RC Committee is doing some work on the riverside from 10am on.

Looking at May 2nd OR 3rd for a work party on both sides. Weather permitting of course. Here's some of the things we're looking at getting done ....

Range needs new target holders and general cleanup. (Fairly quick jobs)

Riverside needs shoreline cleared of small brush growth, remove sumac trees behind/around bathrooms and the small growth around the stumps. (Looking to remove the stumps later this year)
