At our school, we are a weapons-based martial arts system.

Our training includes saber, cutlass/machete, knife, grandfather’s stick, baston, and kubaton, with a major emphasis on the kubaton for real-world self-defense. The kubaton is practical, legal in many situations, concealable, and highly effective. It bridges the gap between empty-hand defense and edged-weapon awareness — giving people a formidable defensive option without immediately escalating to lethal force.

But there is a deeper reason why we train weapons.

Historically, martial arts were always connected to weapons. The “empty hand” paradigm became emphasized later, particularly after the Japanese changed the kanji in karate from “Chinese Hand” to “Empty Hand.” Yet many traditional systems still preserved their weapon roots. Our lineage draws from Okinawan kobudo, Southeast Asian weapon arts, Japanese jujitsu, and Caribbean machete traditions — systems born from real-world survival and protection.

The reality is simple: violence in the street rarely stays “clean.” Weapons appear. Knives appear. Machetes appear. Improvised weapons appear. If a person trains only for empty-hand exchanges, they may be unprepared for the speed, chaos, and danger of real violence.

Weapons training develops a completely different level of awareness. Timing becomes sharper. Reflexes become faster. Precision becomes critical. The practitioner learns distance, angles, positioning, dexterity, and control at a much higher level because weapons move faster and carry greater consequences than empty hands.

Even our grappling and trapping methods are influenced by this mindset. We train with the understanding that you cannot afford sloppy positioning against a weapon. A failed tie-up or loose trap can have devastating consequences. Because of that, our movements become tighter, more efficient, and more intelligent under pressure.

Training weapons is not about aggression. It is about understanding reality, developing discipline, and building the physical intelligence necessary to protect yourself and others.

A weapons-based martial art teaches awareness, responsibility, adaptability, and respect for danger. It sharpens the body and the mind simultaneously.

In our school, weapons are not separate from martial arts.
They are part of the foundation.
