1. Your capacity for work is developed the most through consistency over time and getting it done when you don’t want to. Especially early on in your life. This is true with training and stress in general.

This is why some people can work 80 hours a week no problem while others struggle to do 30. Same with some athletes can play 3 sports and workout 3x a week with no issues while others won’t workout inseason because they don’t want to be sore.

Train your capacity early on and consistently even when you don’t want to.

Super excited to announce that we will be hosting a seminar with Tony Gentilcore on May 19th in my gym! This is going to be a great event! An awesome chance to learn and network work especially if you live close to the Syracuse area. One of the biggest challenges we face as a strength and conditioning coach is what our athletes do outside of the gym that will influence the outcome of their training. Which I’d why we will be starting a Nutrition coaching camp to help bring the gap!

Training lesson. The outcome of your training on a daily and weekly basis is a direct result of your outside stressors in life. Things that take you outside of your routine, stressors that you don’t anticipate and things that happen in your life that are traumatic will negatively affect your performance in the gym. You cannot avoid these things nor should you have the gym as a means to escape these things. This is life.

But when you are going through these extra stressors and trauma life will give you and your performance suffers 1. This is normal, don’t get down on yourself just the fact that you showed up is good enough. 2. It’s okay to do less than you were planning. Progressive overload does not work in this situation, you’re already overloaded with all the other stressor. Restoration and recovery should be the priority. 3. The way you get back on track is to first take care of the outside stressors, make yourself happy. Recenter yourself then you can focus on making progress in the gym. 4. The only thing you need to do on the gym is to maintain the habit. This could be dragging a sled for 10 mins for all I care. Something that is intentional. You intentionally took time out of you day to make yourself healthier. You don’t need to be physically in the gym it needs to be something that represents what going to the gym means to you.

I was reminded of this, this week. Our basement go totally flooded up the first floor! Didn’t know what was going to happen, are we even going to be able to live in our house after this? So many unknowns at first. There’s no way I was going to be getting in good training sessions this week and that’s okay, I won’t beat myself over that. Luckily things are looking up and we should be able to move back in much sooner than later. But the point is, everything in your life will affect how you train and you should use this as a gauge as to whether or not your life is going according to plan or are you over stressed?
