Yesterday, several members of South Shore Waterfowler's served as mentors for youth waterfowl weekend.

Thanks to our hosts and partners including Suffolk County Parks who provided the duck blinds as well as NYS DEC for continuing to facilitate the program.

We had a great day in the field as well. Speaking for myself I was joined by a young man and his father who had previously gone deer hunting as well as pheasant hunting. That experience small game hunting proved to be worthwhile as he bagged his 1st 2 ducks, both mallard drakes.

As an added bonus his 1st mallard actually had a band on it! Banded in 2020 in Nassau County in Baldwin, NY about 40 miles away from where it was taken. Retrieves were made by 2 year old Hudson who was thankful for the work.

Would be great to hear other stories so please share your day whether it be for youth waterfowl weekend or veterans waterfowl weekend.

l for one am excited to see what the season has in store when the Long Island season opens in 2 weeks.

Only 2 days away......
South Shore Waterfowler's Association Presents The 45th Annual Duck Boat Show & Waterfowl Festival.

The forecast looks great and we can't wait to see everyone. Gates open at 9am for the public and at 7am for vendors and anyone bringing and entering their duck boat to the show.

Boats not grassed yet? Bring it anyway and work on it at the show. Don't have any salt hay? We've got a vendor bringing long cut salt hay from Jersey to the show for sale.

We'll have duck Decoy head painting too for the kids to get them involved.

What about dogs? We'll have a retriever demo that's taking place that always brings a smile to anyone's face.

If you see it in the flyer it'll be there.

📣 There's still time to sign up for the 28th Annual Youth Waterfowl Program for young hunters on Long Island, happening Saturday, October 18, and November 8, 2025!

The Youth Waterfowl Program is a special event to help junior hunters, ages 12 - 15, prepare for and participate in Youth Waterfowl Days. The program includes instruction in:

🦆 Waterfowl identification
🦆 Fi****ms safety review
🦆 Retriever and decoy use
🦆 Cold water survival and boating safety
🦆 Trap shooting

The deadline is quickly approaching for those who are candidates for the Youth Waterfowl Program AND Youth Waterfowl Weekend.

South Shore Waterfowler's has been a part of this program since it began 28 years ago.

Please check out the details provided by NYS DEC and if you know of someone who is a candidate get them signed up.

For any of us who run a duckboat.
Do you have your boater safety certificate?

Regardless of how long you've been running a boat everyone is now required to have their boater safety certificate on their possession.

If you are stopped by local law enforcement including DEC and don't have it you will get a ticket.

I'm sharing this info for anyone looking to get their certificate as well as share the details of this law that went into effect for ALL on January 1st, 2025.

America's Boating Club of Captree is offering a NYS Safe Boating Course. It will be held on 2 consecutive Saturdays from 9am-1pm, 10/18 and 10/25 at the Town Of Babylon Pool Building. For more information and to register go to Captreeboaters.com.
