Roughly four decades ago, the “Earth Day Marathon” took participants on a 26.2 mile trip inside Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, NY. Later, the race was moved out onto the streets and rebranded the “Long Island Marathon.” A half-marathon was added in the early 1980s and thousands of participants from all over the area have been taking part in Long Island’s premier competitive running event each ye
ar during the first weekend in May. Now known as The Jovia Long Island Marathon Weekend, the Nassau County Department of Parks, Recreation & Museums hosted event features a marathon, half marathon, 10K race, 5K race, 1K Kids Fun Run! There’s an event for everyone and participants of all athletic abilities are invited to participate in any of the Long Island Marathon. If you can’t participate, we encourage everyone to come out to cheer-on and support your family members, friends and neighbors! Of course, if you’re interested in volunteering, we have plenty of ways in which you can get even more involved.
