we talk a lot on this podcast about what it means to be an athlete, what it means to be a coach, the recruiting process, the mental game → but this episode we’re going behind the scenes of something most families interact with every single season but rarely get to understand from the inside — running a volleyball club

in this clip rob shares how dynamite’s recruiting support started with one player and is growing to many more!

that one players interest turned into a recruiting program that now helps multiple athletes every year find their path to college volleyball

this is what it looks like when a club cares beyond the court!

Throwback to last week’s episode with : silence is acceptance! if you’re not getting what you want — whether that’s reps in a different position, more development, a better fit — and you’re not saying anything about it, you’re choosing it.

Alejandro De Mendoza puts it perfectly here. speak up first, always. and if it’s still not the right fit? there are options. but understand every decision has a trade off. A “better” team, potential less play time of the position you want. more development, potential to move to a smaller club. neither is wrong — it just depends on what YOU value and what you’re willing to give up for it and that right there is not just a volleyball lesson. that is a life skill!

Throwback to my insightful conversation with - nobody tells you how hard the transition out of playing can be but Emily didn’t just figure out life after volleyball — she built an entirely new lane in it! sports broadcasters aren’t just showing up to call a match. they’re producing, pitching, networking, building their brand, and creating opportunities that don’t exist yet. there are so many ways to keep the sport you love in your life and no one size fits all approach to your long-term career!

Emily’s advice to her younger self? work hard, set real goals, and never stop bettering your craft — the sport will keep giving back to you if you keep showing up for it.

knowing how to run a drill, teach a pass, design a system — you can learn all of that in a weekend clinic. what you can’t learn overnight is how to earn trust, motivate a group, and actually see the human being in front of you before you see the athlete.

Alejandro has been coaching for over a decade, even working with the USA national team, and this is the thing he comes back to!

people first. always!

Alejandro De Mendoza shares the importance of a growth mindset vs fixed mindset!

the way you praise an athlete changes everything “you’re so smart” vs “you worked so hard” — research shows growth mindset isn’t just a buzzword, it’s the difference between an athlete who shrinks under pressure and one who steps up to it!

“i can’t jump serve.” vs “i can’t jump serve YET.”

that one word is the difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset — and it’s something every athlete and coach needs to hear!

my full conversation with Alejandro De Mendoza drops tomorrow! we talk growth mindset, coaching the whole athlete, club culture, and so much more. this one is packed with great insights!

Something I say all the time — it never hurts to ask! One door may close but another opens always opens. pitched herself to volleyball publications and networks by saying here’s what you’re missing and here’s why you need me. She found the gaps nobody else was filling and made herself the answer. Now she’s on ESPN, Big Ten Network, Fox, CBS — everywhere you can watch volleyball.

So whatever space you’re trying to break into — just ask. Most people want to help others achieve their dreams, you just have to take the chance and find the right door of opportunity. I am grateful for all Emily has paved in this space!

Throwback to last weeks episode 🤍 If you’re going through the recruiting process right now, take all factors into consideration! Assistant Coach shares her story. She casted a wide net because she didn’t know where to begin, and then she started narrowing.

Where am I willing to live? City campus or traditional?
Does this coach run a system that fits me?
Do they recruit players like me?

She made her own highlight videos. She sent her own emails. Her mom helped but she drove the process. By sophomore year she had a focused list of schools that actually made sense for her. And then Pitt came along — Coach Fisher saw her take an overpass that nobody else stepped up for and said “I want that girl on my team.” He offered her a spot as a libero even though she was a setter her whole life. The door opened because she put herself out there AND because she was versatile enough to play a different role.

Being a multi-sport athlete is something both & I feel strongly about!

Emily played volleyball and track all through high school before playing college volleyball at . She chose a two’s team her last two club seasons so she could keep running track and had the support from her coaches. At 5’8” she could touch 10 feet and that explosive ability came from years of cross-training as a jumper and sprinter — not just from playing volleyball year round.

We see kids getting siloed into one sport and one position way too early. Playing other sports makes you a better athlete. So especially heading into summer — if you love volleyball but also love something else, do both. Early specification isn’t always the answer, let athletes be athletes!
