The gym gets all the credit. Recovery gets none.

That’s backwards.

I’m at Vivid IV in Grand Rapids right now getting a drip. B12, magnesium, vitamin C hitting my bloodstream direct.

After 30+ years of training I can tell you one thing separates guys who keep making progress in their 40s and 50s from the ones who plateau and break down.

Somebody lied to you about protein.

The 30g rule has Men eating six meals a day like it’s a part time job. Meal prep Sundays. Tupperware in the office fridge. A shake alarm between meetings.

And it’s built on a myth.

Your body doesn’t waste protein past 30g. Researchers gave people 100g in a single sitting and their muscles were still putting it to work 12 hours later. Digestion simply slows down and drip-feeds it through. Nothing lost.

Here’s the part that matters if you’re over 40. Your muscles actually need bigger doses to respond, not smaller ones. It’s called anabolic resistance, and the fix is 40 to 50g per meal, 3 or 4 times a day. That’s the whole game.

So the client dinner isn’t ruining your progress. The travel day where you only manage two big protein meals instead of six perfect ones still works. Hit your daily total and let the meals fit your calendar, not the other way round.

I see it every week.

Guys over 40 comparing themselves to some 28 year old fitness influencer sitting at 8% body fat. Thinking that’s the target. Thinking if they just cut harder they’ll get there.

It doesn’t work like that.

At 45 your body responds to extreme leanness completely differently. Below 10-12% and things start breaking down fast. Testosterone drops. Sleep goes. Libido disappears. You’re burning muscle instead of fat and you don’t even realise it.

And the worst part? The damage doesn’t always show up now. It shows up at 60.

The guys who spent their 40s chasing shredded often hit their 60s with no muscle, low hormones and a body that’s running on empty.

I’ve worked with enough men to know what actually works long term.

12-18% body fat. Lean, strong, athletic. Hormones in a good place. Sleeping well. Still training hard and feeling it at 60.

That’s the goal. Not the lowest number. The right number.

I wasted my entire 30s having the same conversation every Monday.

“Maybe I’ll skip today.”
“Maybe I’ll start next week.”
“Maybe after this quarter calms down.”

It never calmed down. I just got softer, slower, and more tired every year.

Now I’m 52. Stronger than I was at 32. More disciplined than I was at 35.

Here’s what changed — and it wasn’t motivation, discipline, or some new program:

I stopped negotiating with myself at 5 AM.

That’s it. That’s the whole secret.

Because here’s the truth no one tells busy executives: you don’t have a motivation problem. You have a negotiation problem. Every morning you sit in bed and re-litigate a decision you already made the night before.

You wouldn’t do that with your biggest client. You wouldn’t cancel a board meeting because you “didn’t feel like it.” You wouldn’t push your kid’s school pickup to “sometime Friday.”

But you’ll do it to yourself. Every. Single. Monday.

Stop.

The body you want at 50 isn’t built on motivation. It’s built on appointments you refuse to miss.

This week — pick ONE training time. Put it on the calendar. Treat it like the CEO of your life called the meeting.
