Trauma can disrupt our connection with the body. Many people learn to tune out body sensations in order to survive.

In Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY), there is an invitation to notice what is happening inside — perhaps the feeling of your feet on the floor, muscles engaging, breath moving, or the experience of choice in movement.

This is called interoception: awareness of internal body sensations.

Interoception can create opportunities to reconnect with what you're feeling, recognize stress earlier, and practice choice in how you respond. In TCTSY, there is no “right way” to notice. Simply opportunities to explore, at your own pace, what it might be like to experience your body differently.

No yoga experience needed.

A new study asked U.S. adults with PTSD symptoms what they thought about trauma-sensitive yoga.

91% had never heard of it. 96% were interested once they had.

The researchers concluded that awareness of programs is the primary barrier — not cost alone, not skepticism, not resistance to yoga. People simply do not know TCTSY exists.

If you are a certified TCTSY facilitator: this is your reminder that the work of making this methodology visible is not separate from the work of delivering it. The two things are the same work right now.

The full paper will soon be available for free in the CFTE Research Library at healwithcfte.org/research. We do not believe research should live behind a paywall. Full access for all research in our library has been purchased so the community can read the whole thing.

What Makes TCTSY Different?

Choice-making is one of the foundational principles of Trauma Center Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY).

Trauma can impact a person’s sense of agency — the experience of having choice or ownership in one’s body.

In TCTSY, participants are invited to explore movement without an expectation to move in a particular way. Options are offered, and participants choose what, if anything, feels right for them in the moment.

These moments of choice can offer participants an opportunity to experience something different in relationship with their body.
