Understanding how clothes dry will help you to adapt different methods of drying clothing to the environment and situation you find yourself in.

Clothes dry through evaporation.

Heat and airflow both speed up evaporation.

So what are the sources of heat and airflow we will have available to us?

Sources of heat:

1. Sun
2. Fire
3. Body Heat
4. Hot Water

Sources of airflow:

1. Wind
2. Induced Airflow (ie from walking)

Do you prefer the sunrise or sunset?

I love a sunset, especially after a hard day in the mountains.

Sitting in pure silence, feeling the fatigue of a day well spent, and having nothing distract you from your own thoughts.

It’s one of the most healing things you can do.

If you struggle hiking uphill, you lack endurance.

If your legs burn - you lack muscular endurance.

Fix this with high volumes of body weight squats, lunges and step-ups.

If your lungs burn - you lack cardiovascular endurance.

Fix this with long, slow runs (30mins+) at a pace easy enough to breathe only through your nose.

What do we gain by establishing backpacking routines?

Backpacking routines will give rise to a number of key benefits:

1. Speed & efficiency (spend time exploring not doing chores!)

2. Gear accountability (no more lost gear!)

3. Fast & easy access to gear when you need it (no more gear dumps on trail!)

Here’s a simple but effective way of completely waterproofing your backpacking gear.

I use a hybrid of both a pack liner and individual dry bags. If you've read our previous article on systemizing gear you'd understand why being organized is so important. But you also have to keep your gear dry. You can do both.

This is the Patagonia Houdini Wind Jacket.

It weighs just 105 g or 3.7oz and packs down smaller than a fist.

It’s perfect for shoulder season when you need a thin, breathable layer to protect you from the wind.

This is easily the most frequently worn jacket in my kit during 3 season backpacking.

You can learn more about this and loads of other gear in our virtual gear closet at Ode to the Pilgrim (Link in bio)

Here are a couple of Do’s & Don’ts when drying clothing in your sleeping bag:

Do:

1. Keep clothing between your shoulders and your knees - this is the area of the body that produces the most heat and will prevent your feet from getting cold
2. Larger garments like shirts can be laid flat on your chest for faster drying
3. Lay clothing on the non-zippered side of your sleeping bag
4. If you are a quilt user, try to lay the majority of clothing on your body, as drafts may slow down the drying of clothing laying by your side.

Don't:

1. Bunch up your clothes - you want to lay them out as openly as possible
2. Lay on your clothes - they will not dry
3. Wear the clothing - this will make you too cold and oils/sweat from your body will keep the clothing damp

If you use a line to dry your clothes, the wind can become a huge pain.

You obviously won't want to carry clothes pegs into the backcountry, but there are many ultralight, ingenious alternatives I have seen over the years:

hair pins
split rings
bread tags
plastic dress shirt clips
cutting splits into little sticks

Drying soaking wet clothing in the backcountry through evaporation alone could take days. This is not how we want to go about it. Before we attempt to dry our clothing through evaporation we need to take them from wet to damp.

There are two effective ways we can do this:

1. You can wring them out
2. Or you can towel wrap them

Now that the clothing has been taken from wet to damp, we can shift to passive drying methods that utilize evaporation to completely dry the clothes.

It’s wild how the human race has changed over the last 20 years.

Most of us would find it a painful struggle to go 24 hours without a phone.

We’d rather listen to negativity, emotionally charged propaganda, and trash music than listen to a creek, the birds, and our thoughts.

Some simple rules to manage backpack weight distribution:

1. Lighten your gear. The lighter your gear, the less weight distribution matters and the more freedom you have to pack solely based on access requirements.

2. If two pieces of gear will be stacked on the same layer in your backpack, always place the heaviest item against the back panel.

3. Try to avoid carrying heavy objects and unnecessary gear in external front pockets.
