It’s time for our Tuesday Tip! Struggling with sensory regulation? Make a sensory safety kit to help.
What is a sensory safety kit?
A curated collection of tools designed to help individuals—particularly those with autism, sensory processing differences, or anxiety—manage sensory overload, reduce stress, and improve focus. These kits are often designed to take with you wherever you go, providing a sense of stability and self regulation, often reducing anxiety and meltdowns.
What’s in a sensory safety kit?
Every individual will have different things in their kit, but most kits begin with a bag, purse, f***y pack, or backpack. A good place to start is asking what sensory experiences you like and dislike. Think about our senses- sight, touch, taste, smell, and sound. Sensory safety is the idea that we have some control over the sensory input that we receive, and using tools to manage sensory overload to stay more regulated.
Sensory Safety Kit- Proprioception and Vestibular Senses
Proprioception is how your body knows where it is in space. Your muscles, tendons, and joints tell your brain how you are positioned and moving. The vestibular sense comes from your inner ear. It tells you how to keep your balance! These senses are very important and help us every day. They help you walk, and prevent you from bumping into things. Some people find that moving their bodies helps them process how they are feeling and keeps them more regulated. Things like spinning, swinging, jumping, and rocking can help release energy or anxiety in your body. You don’t need to have fancy equipment to do this, but We Rock The Spectrum is always here to help! Having a dedicated time and space to use these senses is important to a child’s development- that’s why they love to do big movement play!
Having access to these tools- even if they aren’t always used- can bring a sense of safety and calm. Your kit may change over time, and that’s ok! Come back every week for a deeper dive into what to include in your kit and how to use it!
