I started this page several months ago believing maybe I would be able to inspire one individual, a PT, an OT, or a Personal Trainer. No matter the age or frailty you can get healthier with strength training.
I was released from a TCU after surviving sepis 14 months ago. I was very weak. Saying I was frail would be an overstatement. I could pinch my flexed bicep or tricep between my fingertips. But I had gotten some good ideas about stengthening my core from the PT's and OT's at the TCU. It took a few weeks but I decided I had to get stronger. I felt using resistance in any and all exercises was crucial to achieving my goal - lean mass and strength. And, it had to be accomplished in my wheelchair. So along this journey I have come up with some 40 to 50 exercises and variations thereto, all in my wheelchair.
Results: I could perform leg extensions with 5 # when discharged from the TCU. Now I work with 140 # when performing leg extentions. I used green bands to do tricep extentions, about 10 #. A few weeks ago I posted a video where I was able to get 6 reps with combination tubes of 230 #.
So if this guy, me, being super weak, old, dumb, and in a wheelchair 14 months ago can make so much progress, then anyone can. I am not dumb but it makes the story even more plausible.
Remember I started this with trying to make a difference in one persons life. Well it happens our mailman, I will call him Bob, because that is his name, stopped over to deliver some packages. He asked me if was still working out. I confirmed I was. He said I had been an inspiration to him. He was trying to lose weight with some dietary changed with some ok results. We had discussed what I was doing so he borrowed some dumbbells from a neighbor and started strength training. Said he felt great, better than ever.
If I inspired him, just one person, to get stronger and healthier my journey with all the challenges it has entailed made me smile and work even harder. Thank you Bob!!!
