This past Sunday, June 4th, Duxbury Fitness hosted its final 5k .. SO MUCH goes into getting this race off the ground that I really didn't have a moment to feel all the feels. Even on the day of the event, with all the buzz and excitement, I didn't realize just how bittersweet it all was. It wasn't until I heard awards being announced outside, but I couldn't bring myself to get out there knowing that those awards marked the end of the race.. and the end of a chapter..

Just like every race before it, this year's was another great success! We couldn't have done it without our sponsors: Duxbury Animal Hospital, Cadillac Hill Electric LLC,Brabo Realty, Duxbury Bay Maritime School, Bay State Financial, Repel Pest Solutions, Frame Center, Island Creek Oysters, State Rep Josh Cutler, Health Care South, Powicki Physical Therapy and The Sandy Dog; all of those who gave in-kind: Crocs, KKaties, Brabo - Scott Hokanson, Country Rentals and Marathon Sports; the many many donated raffle items, all of our amazing volunteers, and of course the immense help of South Shore Race Management LLC!

I am honored and proud to have had our Farewell 5k supporting Duxbury Elementary Playgrounds Project. Thank you to all that came out to run, volunteer, and just hang out! Who knows, maybe the next owner of 612 Congress Street will want to keep the race going! Here's to hoping!
I'd like to give a special shoutout and THANK YOU to Joanne McMorrow Photography for documenting the day! View more highlights and purchase finisher photos here: https://joannemcmorrowphotography.smugmug.com/Duxbury-Fitness-5K/n-dDCWK3/i-2G62HPf

THE SALE OF DUXFIT NEWS!

Quite a few months ago I announced I would be selling Duxbury Fitness and looking for the next person to take the reins. That time has come! Throughout June, Coach Peter Kaufman will be taking over Duxbury Fitness, and moving to his new location inside Unrivaled Fitness & Performance at 187 Summer Street, Kingston as of July!

Peter has been an integral part of the DuxFit Fam for the past 2 years, and my Lead Operations Coach for the last year. Peter's excellent rapport with clients, along with his background as a Strength & Conditioning Specialist and Certified USA Weightlifting Coach, makes him an excellent fit to carry on DuxFit's journey. His decision to move into Julie Armstrong's facility at Unrivaled Fitness adds to the serendipity, as Julie and I came up together through the personal training scene and have overlapped in our careers on multiple occasions.

I have been training in Duxbury for over 16 years. In so many ways, Duxbury has been more my home than my actual home of Carver.

I want to thank all of my clients over the years. Many have been with me from the very beginning, following me from my previous location and being there for the opening of Duxbury Fitness in 2009. They have known me pre-marriage, pre-kids, through the ups and the downs, and I have known them the same. Thank you to all of my clients, past and present, that have allowed me to be a part of their lives. I'm so grateful for the relationships I've forged over the years in this community.

I'd like to give a special thank you to DuxFit Coach Allison Spetrini, who has been incredible and will be greatly missed as we all head into our next chapters. I can't thank Allie enough for the hard work and loyalty she's given me over the last 3.5 years with DuxFit.

This will be a bittersweet transition over the course of June, but I can't be more proud of this Little Gym With a Big Heart and excited for what it will become with Peter at the helm.

⏱️ Rest Periods or Inter-set Rest is highly dependent on what your goal is for that workout.
👉Simply, shorter rest periods are better for muscular endurance, and longer rest periods are better for strength & power development.
👉Intensity also plays a role in rest periods. If you just completed a Low Intensity set of an auxiliary exercise such as calf raises or face pulls, you won’t require a long rest period to be prepared for your next set. Conversely, doing a set of heavy squats or split jumps at High Intensity will require longer rest before your body is prepared to perform another set.
👉Gauging intensity also depends on how many reps you perform. Similar to rest periods determining what your training goal is, varying sets & reps determines if you are training towards Muscular Endurance, Hypertrophy, or Strength & Power.
⏱️💪Balancing Rest & Intensity is vital when keeping your training goals in mind.
👉Focusing too much in one area will lead to overuse injury and a lack of results.
👉Varying Rest & Intensity as you move through your training year (Macro Cycle) will give you the results you’re looking for and keep you healthy and ready for more!

MONDAY MINI BUT MIGHTY -
Shut down the screens! Many of us use the TV or our phones to unwind at night, which is fine! However, the stimulating blue light of screens interferes with your brain's production of melatonin, making it harder to fall asleep.

Make it a point to shut down all screens 20 minutes before you intend to go to bed. Use that time to read, meditate, journal, reflect on your day or set some goals for the next day.

If you must be on your phone or tablet, set it to 'night mode' so your brain isn't being switched on by the blue light, but still try to give yourself a few minutes to zone out and just be in the moment before you drift off to 😴

There are SO many supplement options out there, and we are all bombarded with ads for them on a regular basis. Some people cling onto supplements in hopes they will be able to do less work with greater results (Not how it works) Others believe supplements aren't necessary at all ('necessary' is debatable but they can definitely help).

Supplements can certainly increase results, but we DON'T believe you need a 12 capsule daily stack that you're spending hundreds of dollars on a month.

If you want to keep things simple, add in these 3 supplements for definite improvements:

💊BCAAs promote greater gains in fat-free mass, delays fatigue in prolonged exercise and plays a key role in muscle recovery.

💊MULTIVITAMIN - A good quality multi is simply helpful to fill in the gaps of missed nutrition through real food. When you're working out hard, you put your immune system at risk, a multi is an easy way to get extra boost.

☕CAFFEINE increases circulating epinephrine, increasing focus and energy output for improved performance. Caffeine also increases body temperature, resulting in greater fat burn.

As with anything, quality matters.
💊Choose a quality BCAA and multi without fillers and tons of added sugars. You get what you pay for with these.
☕Find the right amount of caffeine that helps you. If you're getting the jitters, sweating (not from your workout), difficulty focusing or getting agitated, it's too much! We are not promoting energy drinks with high levels of caffeine!

Do you have a favorite supplement that you swear by? We'd love to hear it!
