"Yeah, I'll just shoot 'em.."

You have definitely met the person who confidently says this. They carry a pistol and they can solve any problem with it. This is classic the hammer & nail philosophy... When you are a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Don't be this person. Taking life should be a last resort.

It's a smart tactic to carry multiple 'layers' of defensive response, especially non-lethal options. One that gets mentioned all the time is pepper spray or OC spray. With the right product and training, pepper sprays can be quite useful, however there are some glaring issues that must be addressed.

1. Most people who carry pepper spray have never used it before. If you have never used it or tested it, how do you know that it actually works? Would you bet your life on it?

2. Most people who carry spray don't know the effective range or spray pattern. If you don't know already, fighting is all about ranges of combat. You should know the effective ranges of your spray and the spray spread/pattern at those various ranges.
