Congrats to Lisa on an amazing 3rd kyu test!

Lisa delivered power, precision, and poise throughout this demonstration. Her focus was invisible. Her confidence soared. She rightly earned the honor of wearing the black hakama (the big skorty pants Aikido is famous for)!

Our dojo is not only lucky to have Lisa train with us, bringing her sunshine of laughter, but also to have her sound wisdom on our Board of Directors!

Three cheers for Lisa as she marches onward, pursuing the way of harmony and peace.

This intro class has earned the *thrown*

We crowned them "Best. Beginners. Ever." They picked up rolling and weapons lickity-split. They show up for two or more weekly classes. They demonstrate so much courage trying something new and weird (and Aikido, Bokkendo, and Jodo all serve as a humble reminder that you only *think* you know your left from your right)!

It's also inspiring to see our community come together to share what they know or the steps of a technique every time they pair with a new student. DSBK is truly a collaborative learning space where you can learn the art of peace, piece by piece...or peace by peace. 🪷

Anyone can still join our 12-week beginner series. We offer free private lessons to catch you up or launch you ahead. Sign up online at durangoaikido.com (link in bio).

Look ma, no hands! They were sliced off...

Kidding. No hands were severed during our super fun Sip n' Slice sword event at Eso Terra's Arboretum winery ( )! But a lot of kiddos and their parents learned a ton and a had a blast learning all about the art of Japanese sword fighting.

Thanks Eso Terra for hosting us back in September. It was a busy end of the year and we were delighted to rediscover these photographs.

Skip the February fizzle...

Research finds that up to 80% of New Year's Resolutions fail by February 1st. Rather than ramp up your workout schedule or take on one more hobby, walk a new path to a new you. The "do" in Aikido refers to "the way" of peace, or the path of peace.

Take your time and walk this path in DSBK's fully supported 12-week Starter Series that introduces participants to the Aikido's unique and effortless techniques for deflecting conflict. Learn to feel more calm under pressure. More willing to go with the flow. More capable than you ever imagined at facing difficult challenges.

This series is great for slow learners, people with two left feet, and anyone with a kind heart. (For ages 18+)

Save over 50% on the $480 series when you book all 24 classes for just $250. Get a rad shirt (T-shirt or long sleeve) and free private lessons to catch up when you miss a class or want to rocket ahead.

As a 501c3, we want to ensure financial barriers or tight budgets do not hinder your growth. Drop in for $20 or split the cost into three micro payments of $84. Ask about student and military discounts, and scholarships.

Sankyu...sankyu very much, everyone.

Three cheers for Dusty who recently sailed through a very precise and accurate demonstration of all the sankyu (3rd kyu) test requirements (shinsa). Dusty's time with DSBK goes waayyyy back to pre-pandemic times. Back then, he was a rambunctious high schooler with a penchant for high break falls thanks to his gymnastics training.

Now, he is a leader and role model in the dojo. We are so lucky to have him and we offer our gratitude not only to Dusty, but also to whole community because it takes the group to prepare a student for a test demonstration. A lot of practice times outside of class have to happen and our community always steps in to help each other excel.

Now it's just 2nd and 1st kyus between Dusty and a black belt (shodan) rank.

✨️Dive into fun and transformation in 2026!✨️

Aikido is Japan's youngest martial art and it's also one of the most challenging styles. Rather than kick or punch or retaliate against attackers, Aikido parlays mind-bending physics and anatomy manipulation to redirect and off-balance opponents. You protect yourself without adding violence to the situation. Embracing this mindset proves to be life-altering for many participants.

See the link in our bio to get all the details on the 2026 Starter Series launching in January. Affordable pricing options are available, or save 50% when you book the entire series!

Aikido also boosts balance, coordination, and memory capacity. It imparts lots of body awareness exercises, which prevent unwanted falls, tumbles, or stumbles in daily life.

DSBK offers a welcoming community with students and instructors eager to share knowledge and help each other improve.

Maybe stop by the 45-minute Crash Course any Monday, 5:30-6:15pm to sample this unusual martial art.

We never underestimate the courage of newcomers.

It takes real guts to try a whole new hobby...especially one famously full of "20-year techniques," meaning you may start feeling like you have the hang of the basics 20 years in!

Max is clearly way ahead of the curve, crushing his demo of 2 techniques and 1 weapons kata learned during the 3 month intro series. In 3 more months, he will be eligible to earn his first belt rank, or kyu, on the way to shodan (black belt).

Hip-hip hooray, Max!

The next beginner series kicks off in January. Just kidding--we never kick in Aikido. Let's say it rolls out Jan 19, 2026. Visit our website for details. Link in bio.

Talk about stick-to-itiveness!

Our beginner students have come such a long way over three months! They're tackling the early stages of Muso Ryu Jo Awase, a legendary jo vs sword training exercise that helps you develop poise under any circumstance (because you have stick and they have a two-foot razorblade)!

If Aikido is a journey to self-refinement, then these folks are equipped to go all the way. And if nothing else, they have handy-dandy walking sticks for when the going gets tough.

One night. Two tests. Two great students.

Doug and Joe easily passed their Gokyu test demonstrations. Gokyu, or 5th kyu, is the first level students test for in DSBK. Some say it is the hardest test, second only to the black belt (shodan) exam simply because it is a choice you make to challenge yourself and go for belt rank.

Week after week, Joe and Doug show up with intention, dedication, and huge smiles. They are a treat to train with and we can't wait to see how far their journey extends.
