For those who don't know, Karns City senior quarterback Mason Martin collapsed on the field in the 3rd quarter. He was life flighted to Presby Hosp. He remains in critical condition with a severe brain injury.
Lord Jesus, we come to you with heavy hearts, but with full faith knowing your power & greatness. We are praying for this young man, specifically for his brain and the damage it sustained. We ask that your miraculous hands hold him tightly as you heal & repair his body. Lord, his family is desperate and broken. We pray that the holy spirit continues to comfort them & interseeds on their behalf. We pray over the entire hospital staff treating this young man. We rest knowing that Jesus is present in this heartache.
We give this entire tragedy over to you, Lord!

3A Game of the Week From SteelCityBlitz:
Elizabeth Forward (1-0) at West Mifflin (0-1)
In 3A, defending WPIAL Champs Belle Vernon are the clear favorite. But the race for who is #2 (and potentially who could face the Leopards in the title game) is wide open. Both Elizabeth Forward and West Mifflin (along with Avonworth) are in that mix and this game will go a long way towards sorting out the contenders in 3A. These former conference foes now square off in non-conference play. Elizabeth Forward, under new head coach John DeMarco, pounded another Mon Valley foe Ringgold 37-0 in Week 0. Ryan Messina took over at quarterback and threw for 100 yards and a touchdown. Charlie Nigut was the star of the night in the backfield, running just 4 times for 55 yards but scoring on two of those carries. Jace Brown and Anthony St. Angelo also found the end zone for the Warriors. West Mifflin is looking to bounce back after a Week 0 loss to 4A powerhouse McKeesport. The Titans only touchdown of the season was scored by Jaimere Loften. Leading rushers DelRon White and Richie Fix both return after scoring double-digit TDs last season, so the Titans are certainly a strong contender in 3A.

Team notes

West Mifflin: The Titans finished in a three-way tie for second place in the 3A Western Hills Conference with Beaver and South Park, two games behind conference champion Avonworth. After scoring over 50 points and beating Southmoreland in the first round of the playoffs, West Mifflin’s season ended with a loss to Freeport. David Fleming, a transfer from Central Catholic, will start at QB with Rico Steele, son of head coach Rod Steele, leading the way on the lines for the Titans.

McKeesport: While there are a lot old new faces this year at the skilled positions for the Tigers, they return four of their five starting linemen from last year in seniors Brady Boyle, Courtney Dunn, Jayden Keys and Nick Winowitch. Anthony Boyd, the younger brother of former McKeesport standout running back Bobbie Boyd, will likely take over as the workhorse in the triple-option offense.

Historic factoids

• Visiting McKeesport held the ball for all but 13 seconds of the first quarter as they dominated West Mifflin in the 2022 season opener, 40-0. Bobbie Boyd and fellow senior Aemond Knight each scored two touchdowns for the Tigers.

• Eighty-five years ago, McKeesport won the 1938 WPIAL 3A championship by beating Johnstown, 38-20. Sixty years ago, West Mifflin North edged Butler, 12-6, to win the 1963 WPIAL 3A title.

• The last time West Mifflin beat McKeesport was 45 years ago when the Titans tamed the Tigers, 28-26, in the 1978 season.

The Western Hills Conference title could be on the line when these two teams collide in early October. Both teams are coming off good seasons. West Mifflin returns a strong offensive line and three running backs. The Antelopes will count on their defense, which returns safety Andrew Kuban and linebacker Braden Biagiarelli.

If you ask any coach which team is considered the best in WPIAL Class 3A, the unanimous choice is returning WPIAL and PIAA champion Belle Vernon.
