Jean Carmichael: A special person remembered and a beautiful life honored.
Please join us on Friday August 7th at approximately 5:00 PM EDT as we have a celebration of life for Dr. Sandra Jean Carmichael, who passed away on July 26, 2026.
Dr. Carmichael, better known as Jean in the flying community, lived her life to the fullest and on her terms. After seeing an article in a magazine at a very young age, she knew she had to fly. If you knew Jean well, you know once she set her mind to something, she was a force to be reckoned with if you stood in her way. She had a constant thirst for knowledge and a generous heart for helping those in need.
After looking at a few different professions, she settled on medicine and became emergency room (ER) doctor at Fort Oglethorpe and traveled the country as a locum tenens physician for 30 plus years. She received her Bachelor of Science in Anthropology with an emphasis in Archaeology and a minor in Theatre in her early fifties, all the while continuing to work in the ER. She read more books than most libraries have and built an incredible library in her home, which led to her creative writing. She had many short stories published and completed a draft of at least one book.
Her love for flying and competitive nature made her an incredible pilot and, for a short time, an instructor on the training hills of Lookout Mountain Flight Park. She was always happy to help mentor younger pilots, participated in Team Challenges with the Tennessee Tree Toppers, assisted with injuries in the landing zone (LZ) when necessary, taught first aid to employees, and cared for our pilots who were transferred to her ER.
Her thirst for life took her to many places in the US and around the world hang gliding, sailing, hiking, and on cruises. Jean always loved a good bottle of w**e, stray dogs or cats that needed a home, movies of any type, music of any genre, and was an avid fan of both Star Trek and anything Disney.
Please join us on Friday, August 7th at 5:00 PM in the Lookout Mountain Flight Park LZ at 1385 New England Road in Wildwood, Georgia to celebrate the beautiful life of Jean Carmichael. If you are a pilot and it is flyable, then by all means share some air in her memory. We will have a time to share stories, laugh, and smile about this wonderful woman we knew and loved. May it bring comfort to her husband Nathan and family, who will be in attendance.
