Quick(ish?) vulnerable moment here: A year ago, my body couldn’t handle the physical demands of a beach day. Walking in the sand meant my knee snapping into a painful hyper-extension every few steps, propping myself up to read nearly led to dislocated shoulders, and forget about any joint in my body being able to withstand the crash of any wave or the pressure of any tide.

I was recovering from severe burnout, the symptoms of my connective tissue disorder were at their worst, I had been away from dance for longer than ever before (including the time between birth & when I started dancing) – all while renovating the space that is now the studio (and ya know…. starting a business, dealing with the brutal aftermath of back-to-back natural disasters, etc.)

I remember lying in the sand, SO uncomfortable, thinking, “If I can’t even help myself, how can I expect to help anyone else?” My initial instinct was to shut down & say I can’t. That instinct was pretty immediately overridden by my oppositional defiance (thanks ADHD 😉), and the realization / reminder that this stuff – movement, strength, the human body – was kinda my whole thing, the stuff I’ve literally spent my life studying & exploring. The knowledge and passion I was so eager to use to help other people – it wasn’t that I *couldn’t* use it to help myself, I was just so used to feeling unable to put time or energy into taking care of myself that I had built my own obstacle and hadn’t even recognized it as something to overcome.

Reaping the rewards of the work I’ve put in over the past year (and continue to put in) is an incredible feeling, but knowing that I get to use the lessons I’ve learned from the experience to help others makes it all the more fulfilling 💜
