Duncan Lake Disc Golf Courses (D. Lake East & D. Lake West)

Duncan Lake Disc Golf Courses (D. Lake East & D. Lake West) Duncan Lake disc golf courses: The Beast From The East & the Wild West. I asked Greg ( Spinner ) Smith to td the tournament. They did a great job!

I ( Johnny Zumwalt ) designed the West Course in 1999 and the City of Duncan approved it. I then with the help of a friend installed 18 landscape timbers as targets so we would be able to play the course until we could get all the baskets. In the year 2000 I decided to have a tournament there an called it the Duncan Lake Hillclimber Open. The first year we had to borrow portable baskets from Ardmo

re to have it because we didn't have enough baskets yet. He said yes and td'd the first three Hillclimbers. I was able, with the help of a friend, get the whole 18 permanent baskets installed in early 2001. In 2003 I td'd, with the help of Barb Paske, the 4th Hillclimber Open. I designed the East Course in 2004 and finally was able to get he last baskets installed in 2013 with generous donations from Joe Rotan ( Twisted Flyer ) , Jose' Menoza, Dewayne Sivils, Dougie Doubles tournment, The Sooner Disc Golf club, The OKCDGA club, and The Jeremy Martin Memorial tournament. I asked Jose' Mendoza to run the 2004 Hillclimber and he ran it for the next several years. During the years he ran it, the attendance sky rocketed. Jose' decided to give it up for someone else, I believe in 2007 after that year's DLHO. He referred Joe Rotan to me and I asked Joe to td it in 2008. Joe picked up right where Jose' left off with professionally, very fun, smoothly ran tournaments. Always with the help of Barb Paske and a handful of other great volunteers. Joe has ran it up to now and plans on keeping on running it and keeping the Hillclimber tradition alive. The Hillclimber now fills up to capacity every year! I have done the majority of the basket intallation, mowing, trimming, trash pick up and other general maintenance of he courses before each Hillclmber with the help of some great hearted volunteers. This page is dedicated to the Annual Hilllimber tournaments and the two Duncan Lake courses. I will be adding pics all the time and posting info on the courses and the annual DLHO. I hope to see a lot of pics and stories from you guys also. I also want to thank Andy Pearson and his wife Jill for all of the work they have done, doing the course maintenance when I decided to give it a rest. Now some locals keep it up nicely, and from what I have heard the City of Duncan helps out some. Joe Rotan passed the torch to Jason Schwake a few years ago, and has kept the Hillclimber alive and well! Thanks to everyone who comes every year and plays, and to all the volunteers each year that keep the tradition alive!

Crazy that it's already been 26 years! Thank you Jason Schwake and everyone else that keeps it going strong.

I would like to apologize in advance for the several fairways on the West/Lake course that the cedar trees have made them super hard to play. My plan is to thin them out considerably before next years Hillclimber. Anyone that wants to help me, let me know. I am embarrassed that I haven't done it already. Those courses can wear you out trying to keep the growth of cedars and briar from getting out of control. Being worn out from rotating shift work for 30 years is my excuse. 😮
I have been really happy that local players and the City of Duncan have been keeping the courses mowed. Andy Pearson took over for me for a few years mowing, before the City started helping out. Steve King has helped out a lot over the years also. Love his homemade benches he has built for the courses! There are more to thank over the years also. Marty Dayhoff helped me out a lot in getting the original West course installed and he also helped with the mowing the first few years. Thank you guys! Back in the day the City wouldn't help with any of it. It was all on me and anyone I could talk into helping. Now that I don't have to worry about the mowing, I hope to get to some cedar removal. If you know Duncan Lake, you know how many cedars there actually are. I do not plan on taking too many out. Just enough to where you can have a chance to see your target, and have some legitimate landing areas for your drives.
Anyway, thank you all for still keeping this tourney alive! If you didn't keep coming the traditional would die. I would hate to see that.

The before and after pics of hole #9's basket. Some loser had vandalized it again. They had rendered it useless after bending the basket part too bad to fix. When I got there today it was completely missing. Thankfully I have several more basket parts, and was able to fix it pretty easily. Went ahead and painted it while I was at it. I want to thank Casey Estep for replacing the top half of #12's basket on the east course! He also gave me the heads up about #9's. Thank you!
