This was the first time I’ve had an athlete compete in more than three events at the state track and field meet. Jalynn is all about breaking records, so of course she had to go above the three (which was what her brother did last year) and do five events. Last year she tied for 5th in the high jump with a height of 4’10”. She hated, at first, my workout plan for them this season which included a lot plyometric training and exercise drills along with their normal running plans. She saw results in the meets and learned to tolerate the hot practices. She was able to walk away a champion in the high jump with a height of 5’2. She didn’t PR in the triple jump or the long jump, but she got within a half inch of bringing home a long jump medal. She did get a PR in the 300 hurdles by shaving off more than a second from her previous PR which she achieved a couple of weeks ago at the region D meet. Something like that in this part of the season is very impressive. The school record for the 300 hurdles is 53.34 and Jalynn got 53.36 yesterday. Talk about close! The relay team had beautiful handoffs every single leg, but they were up against one of the fastest groups of girls I’ve ever seen at one time. Like I said in the other post, that time would’ve gotten this group 7th place in the 2022 and 2023 meets that I took relay teams to. She was a busy girl this weekend. She had the time of her life and put on a show! And yes, she beat herself up over the half an inch and 0.02 even though she was a state champion in the high jump. She’s a competitor and she always wants to improve. What a season!
