“With a violent fencer, or one who advances without adhering to rules, and depends on the violence of his attack and strength of arm, your best way is to wait temperately, or retire, with a fine line and opposition, as before, until the moment he comes within distance; shew him then, by the vigour and spirit of your pass, that you only waited for the proper period to evince him, that your coolness was the result of intrepidity, rectified by judgment."

- IRISH ADVICE on how to deal with a violent swordsman - from Remark 25 from the book "A Few Mathematical and Critical Remarks on the Sword," Dublin, 1781.

This will be our main training tool for Honor and Sword this year. It is a waster (pronounced wah-ster) which were traditionally wooden swords used to train pages and squires. This one is polypropylene which is cheaper and unbreakable. Each student will have one of these to train with and keep. Students will not be hitting each other with these, we will have sparring swords that are somewhat flexible like the fencing blades. If any student would like to get a jump on training there is a free longsword lesson online that will go through warm-ups, basic stances and movements, and some basic swings (a stick or sword like object is all they need for this):https://swordschool.com/library-item/free-medieval-longsword-beginners-course/

“Accept the challenges so that you can feel the exhilaration of victory.” —General George S. Patton (Fenced in the 1916 Olympics, Army’s Youngest Ever ‘Master of the Sword,’ and designer of the Patton Saber)
