What a fabulous weekend spent at the Deanna Preis Clinic!

The primary focus was in-hand work. Bodhi and I learned the handiest new way to find haunches-in from the ground - its so much simpler than what I was doing! I can't wait to play around with it more.

Kate and Shiner enjoyed similar benefits from their session as well as some fun liberty work.

Deanna was most inspiring to watch. Her approach is kind, clear, fun-forward, and minimal - all the things I aspire to be in my own work. I hope to connect more with her in the future!

I am so grateful to Lorre Mueller for organizing this event and to Vivan Crawford / Restoration Ranch for hosting! Thank you for putting this together in the name of supporting the horses we love.

There are people who own horses, and there are horse people.

Anyone can own horses.
Not everyone can call themself a horse(wo)man.

You can be one of those things independently, or, you can be like Kate Mesches who is both.

As usual, she and Shiner's relationship demonstrated its strength - both in and out of the show pen.
And also as usual, MY favorite moment was witnessing them overcome a challenge together.
Shiner was really struggling with the outdoor pen (but it sure made him look adorable in this picture 💁‍♀️), and what could have been a calamitous trail pattern ended in a nice go. Even though it felt unfortunate from a competition standpoint, it really showcased all the time they have spent building trust in each other - the kind of faith that truly goes both ways.

If you want to go to an event for ribbons alone, I'd urge you to consider a different sport.

Being skin deep is for lotion. The choice to pursue a partnership with a horse will alter you to your very core.

Congrats to Kate and Shiner for their 4th Place standing in the High Point at their first ever Texas Ranch Horse Championship.
Cheers to this success and the many more to come 🥂🍾

Thanks to Nikki Ann Gonzales for a seamless transaction from start to finish and for doing such a nice job with this beautiful guy.

3 RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS WANTED

As a rider, have you been exposed to the phrase “to have an independent seat & hands”?
If so, how would you explain that to someone who is new to riding?
And by your definition, what percentage of your ride would you say that you personally demonstrate “an independent seat & hands”?

If you’ve NEVER heard this phrase, I’ll share my own definition:
To have an “independent seat and hands” means that your seat and hands can function independently of one another while you are riding.
Because they are independent, they can be used in isolation of one another to either “request” something of the horse or fall back and “allow” what has been requested of the horse.
The independence of these two aids are hardly a conscious thought for a rider who truly demonstrates this. The rider’s balance and relaxation in the saddle at all three gaits are occurring with such minimal effort that the rider can put their mind towards other tasks (for example, the bigger picture of what they are trying to accomplish with their horses)

If you feel you possess an independent seat and hands for 60% of your ride or less, I would love to talk with you. I am seeking 5 participants for a research project I am working on to better understand the struggles of riders who feel their current riding skills are holding them back from their bigger goals.

A few additional qualifications for these interviews are that you are: an adult, non-professional rider, who is either an owner of or currently leasing a horse that is sound to ride at all three gaits.

PM if interested - I hope to chat soon!

"What was your biggest takeaway from this weekend?" The question is still rolling around in my brain since Linda Hoover asked it last night. I'm certain the question is on her mind as well. Wonderful snippets of horse and rider transformations flash through my memories of these last three days.

As with most good things in life, its hard to pick just ONE takeaway, but here are a few from my time spent auditing the Manolo Mendez Symposium.

First is, of course, gratitude. I feel immensely grateful to have found a group of teachers who all align on their approach and tenacity towards supporting horses in mind, body, and spirit. Manolo is certainly a leader in this body of knowledge, and to observe him working with horses is to witness a dance between evidence based practices and the mystical unknown. To say he is a master almost feels too light.

One rider in particular stood out to me as a testament to what being present, curious, and coachable can do for the horses in our lives. No one does anything worth mentioning alone. And when so many of us find ourselves trapped in reiterating the past (or our horses past) in a vicious cycle, ad nauseam we doom ourselves to remain there.
It's not that this horse didn't have a story worth telling - trust me, her transformation was out of this world. But that transformation is, again, a testament to her rider's brilliant attitude about her FUTURE rather than her past. Perhaps someday, I will think of that rider and that mare while I grin ear to ear learning piaffe as they did with such elegance.

Third is gratitude, again, for the absolute champions who pulled this event together - People who planted these seeds in my mind years ago, people who changed the trajectory of my life by opening the door for me to a world I believed to only be a dream. Thank you from the bottom of my heart Casey M. Jones Jillian Kreinbring , the wonderful sponsors from Equilearn, the Vluggen Institute for Osteopathy and Education, as well as COUNTLESS others behind the scenes either physically or through sponsorship for bringing us all together.

I have much to ruminate on. And, in light of the horse and rider who inspired me so, as well as the countless wonderful new friends I have made and older friends reconnected with, I am excited for the future.
