A head college football coach told me something on the podcast this week that every parent uploading a son's highlight tape needs to hear.
If your son's best clip is clip number 4, he is already deleted. Coaches decide in the first 3 plays. They are watching on a phone, between meetings, with a stack of other prospects to get through. They click the tape, they watch the first 30 seconds, and they decide. If your fastball is buried later in the film, the coach never sees what your son can really do.
He said something else that surprised me. The thing that gets a kid deleted off the recruiting board the fastest is not the film. It is the transcript. He pulls up a low GPA and that kid is gone, no matter how good the tape is. Grades are a filter coaches run before they will even spend more time on the film.
And here is what most parents do not realize. Social media is part of the evaluation now. What your son posts. Who he reposts. What his counselor says about him in the hallway. All of it. Coaches are doing real homework before they ever extend an offer because mistakes at this level cost the program.
There is one more thing he said that I have to share. Some of the SEC offers parents brag about are not committable. They are favors to a friend that get used to spark momentum. He said schools will do that to help a buddy build a board. That means every offer your son gets needs to be vetted. Ask if it is committable before you celebrate.
