The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Boys Lacrosse Rules Committee and Board of Directors have approved 16 rule changes impacting high school competition in the coming years.
Key Rule Changes & Timeline:
🟢 2029 Season (Game Ball Mandate): Effective January 1, 2029, all official game balls must be fluorescent green or yellow to improve visibility for players, officials, and spectators.
⏱️ 2027 Season (Shot Clock Option): State associations will have the option to adopt a 70-second shot clock starting next school year to enhance pace of play.
🥍 Field & Equipment Rules:
🔹 Updates allow a contrasting-colored center line on artificial fields.
🔹 Goals are disallowed if a scorer’s crosse breaks or loses its head during a shot.
🔹 Clarifications define a dislodged helmet (chinstrap no longer secured over the chin) and lodging of the ball in equipment.
🔹 Host administration or head coaches are designated to oversee field requirements and spectator behavior.
