**AWARENESS IS NOT PARANOIA**

Some people imagine situational awareness as constantly looking over their shoulder, expecting danger everywhere. That isn’t awareness. That’s anxiety.

Real awareness is calm. It means being present enough to notice what is happening around you—and recognizing when something does not fit.

Imagine walking through a parking lot after leaving a grocery store. You’re carrying bags, looking for your keys, and thinking about what you need to do when you get home. Nothing feels dangerous.

But you notice someone changing direction as you change direction. That observation doesn’t mean the person is a threat. It simply means something has changed—and now deserves your attention.

You look again. You create distance. You move toward other people or return to the store. Perhaps nothing happens. That is still a successful self-defense decision.

At 7 Elements KMSD, we relentlessly discuss that awareness should not make you afraid of the world. It should give you more time to understand what is happening and more options for responding.

The goal isn’t to see everyone as dangerous. The goal is to notice when normal becomes abnormal—before abnormal becomes dangerous. Self-defense doesn’t begin with a punch. It begins with attention.

Alan W. Garcia has been a Krav Maga instructor for the past 8 years, having owned a successful Martial Arts franchise for 7 years. In 2022, Mr. Garcia sold his franchise and moved on in partnership with his friend and KM mentee to found “7 Elements” Krav Maga and Self-Defense. Mr. Garcia is a Krav Maga 2nd Degree Black Belt under KMU and the Israeli Federation of Martial Arts. Mr. Garcia is also a KMU Level 3 Instructor. Having been involved in the Martial Arts for over 25 years, he has also trained in Capoeira, KFM/DL, Pekiti Tirsia, BJJ and MMA. Alan loves the constant state of evolution of the defense arts, which has driven him to focus on alternative CQ methods to complement Krav Maga methodologies.
