DSSA, by promoting grassroots development and competitive performance, aims to inspire athletes with DS. What is DSSA and why was it formed? In 2020 we saw a need for families with athletes, who were born with Down syndrome, to come together and share the love of developing and competing in sports. While sports is at the heart of this non-profit (501c3) organization, we strive to focus on developi
ng and promoting the whole athlete to reach their potential, including the highest levels of sporting excellence. Our goal is for athletes to gain independence, while developing their physical and social skills. We are passionate about creating a fun environment that promotes teamwork and inclusion. DSSA will first launch with basketball, skiing, soccer, swimming and tennis programs. Other sports will be rolled out based on member interest. For more information, visit www.dssasports.org
What does DSSA want to achieve for its athletes? We are committed to ensuring a level playing field for athletes with Down syndrome. We know special things happen in 3βs -- (1) we are passionate about bringing awareness, across the USA, that athletes with Down syndrome can train alongside their peers; (2) we are here to inspire families as they develop their child or young personβs sporting experiences including support for devising an action plan that will enable them to work towards achieving their goals; and most importantly, (3) we strive to build character within our athletes that will encourage them to never give up.
