TGL announces full schedule for Tiger Woods/Rory McIlroy indoor golf league
TGL Indoor Golf League Announces Full Schedule and Format
TGL, an innovative indoor golf league supported by golf legends Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, has released its complete schedule. The league, comprising six teams and featuring 24 players from the PGA Tour, will kick off in early January on ESPN and continue weekly through late March, coinciding with the NFL playoffs.
Game Format and Venue
Matches will take place on Tuesday nights and last approximately two hours.
Competitions will be hosted at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, designed specifically for these events, with a capacity for around 1,500 spectators.
The league will feature 15 regular-season matches, a four-team playoff, and a championship series involving the top two teams in a best-of-three format.
Unique Gameplay Structure
TGL combines state-of-the-art screen technology for "drives" with an actual adjustable green for short game and putting. Each match will involve 15 holes, divided into nine holes of team play and six holes of singles match play. Designers have crafted 30 unique holes, using a selection of 15 per match.
Team Details and Schedule
The six teams are associated with different cities and supported by notable figures and groups from other sports realms, including owners like Steve Cohen (New York Mets), Arthur Blank (Atlanta Falcons), and the Fenway Sports Group (Boston Red Sox).
Opening on January 7, New York Golf Club (featuring Matt Fitzpatrick, Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele, and Cameron Young) will face Bay Golf Club (with Ludvig Åberg, Wyndham Clark, Min Woo Lee, and Shane Lowry).
Another notable match on January 14 includes Jupiter Links Golf Club (comprising Woods, Max Homa, Tom Kim, and Kevin Kisner) against Los Angeles Golf Club (boasting players such as Collin Morikawa, Sahith Theegala, Tommy Fleetwood, and Justin Rose).
Throughout the season, Atlanta Drive GC (including Justin Thomas, Patrick Cantlay, Billy Horschel, and Lucas Glover) and Boston Common GC (featuring McIlroy, Keegan Bradley, Adam Scott, and Hideki Matsuyama) will also make their debut.
Establishment and Support
McIlroy and Woods introduced the TGL concept through their collective enterprise, TMRW Sports, in August 2022. This league arose during a tumultuous period marked by friction between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf, which emphasized team play. Unlike the occasional team-based tournaments within the PGA, TGL provides a robust platform for team competitions.
Community Engagement and Adjustments
TGL's branding includes an engaging online and social media presence, complete with videos and merchandise, aiming to establish a connection with fans through their favorite players and associated cities. Originally set to launch earlier, the league's start was delayed due to facility damage caused by a storm.
The league's playoff series will conclude by late March, just ahead of the Masters and the forthcoming major golf events.
