• South Florida Wing Chun Kung Fu Academy Chin Na with a modern twist.
Why We Train Chin Na
At South Florida Wing Chun Kung Fu Academy, we believe self-defense is about more than punches and kicks. Real confrontations often involve grabbing, clinching, or wrestling for control. That’s why Chin Na is an important part of our training.
Chin Na, meaning “seize and control,” is a traditional Chinese martial art that focuses on joint locks, leverage, balance disruption, and controlling an opponent. Instead of relying on strength, it teaches students to use proper body mechanics, timing, and positioning to gain an advantage.
Wing Chun is a close-range fighting system, making Chin Na a natural extension of its principles. When your hands are already in contact with an opponent, there are opportunities to control the arms, break balance, apply a lock, or create an opening to escape. We teach students how striking and controlling work together rather than as separate skills.
Training Chin Na also prepares students for common self-defense situations, such as escaping wrist grabs, dealing with pushes, or responding to someone trying to clinch or hold them. The goal is not to memorize countless techniques, but to understand principles that can be adapted to different situations.
Safety is always a priority. Joint-locking techniques are practiced in a controlled environment with cooperative partners, allowing students to build skill while protecting one another.
By combining Wing Chun with Chin Na, students develop a more complete understanding of close-range self-defense. They learn to strike, control, create space, and respond with confidence when faced with the unpredictable nature of a real confrontation.
