Did You Know? The Chicago Sting won a franchise-best 23 games in 1981, placed 5 players on the all-NASL team, and ultimately captured the 1st Soccer Bowl title in franchise history. Yet Chicago was extended to winner-take-all Game 3 scenarios in each round of the playoffs - including a shootout victory over the San Diego Sockers before 39, 623 at Comiskey Park in the semifinals - and only triumphed through a shootout against the New York Cosmos in Soccer Bowl '81.

Let’s go Sting! 🐝 🏆

NASL Dateline: On 26 September 1981, the Chicago Sting and New York Cosmos played 105 minutes of scoreless soccer and 4 rounds of a tense shootout before Rudy Glenn scored the go-ahead goal and goalkeeper Dieter Ferner blocked Robert Iarusci's final attempt to give Chicago a 1-0 win in Soccer Bowl '81. Sting defender Frantz Mathieu was named Man of the Match as Chicago captured the first title in franchise history before 36,971 at Exhibition Stadium in Toronto.
