Today at AAU Gymnastics Nationals, I witnessed something that broke my heart.
After one of the sessions ended and awards were being presented, I watched a parent chase down one of the event workers while yelling at her. I don’t know all the details, and honestly, they don’t really matter. From what I could gather, it had something to do with not getting the perfect picture of their child during awards.
Meanwhile, that worker was doing what hundreds of volunteers, staff members, judges, coaches, and meet directors are doing all week—giving their time and energy to create an incredible experience for thousands of athletes.
It made me wonder why it’s becoming harder and harder to find people willing to volunteer, host events, and step up to help.
This is why.
Nothing involving thousands of people will ever be perfect. Kids won’t always stand exactly where we want them. We won’t always get the perfect photo. There will be mistakes. There will be inconveniences.
But while one parent was spending those moments angry and yelling, they could have been celebrating their child’s accomplishment.
This is the largest AAU Nationals ever. That’s amazing growth for our sport. But growth only continues when people are willing to give their time, work long hours, and help make these events happen.
So please, be kind.
Be patient.
Say thank you.
Remember that the person you’re frustrated with is probably doing the very best they can.
To the woman who was being yelled at today: I hope you know that one person’s reaction does not represent the rest of us. There are far more people who appreciate your hard work than those who complain about it.
Our kids are watching. Let’s show them what gratitude looks like.
