I hear it all the time….”I want to get faster in the swim” or my personal favorite “I want to be as fast as _______”.

There are no shortcuts in swimming, running, cycling, underwater basket weaving…!!! Look at the picture…do you think those men got in that shape by looking for shortcuts..???

You want to get faster in the swim, then you need to do several things, (1) swim (a lot), (2) get good coaching/private lessons, (3) get physically stronger.

Water is 800 times more dense than air, it does not have handles for you to grab, it takes a combination of power and technique to get fast..! It takes the same combo wether you want to go 1:40/100 yds or :55/100yds or :40/100yds or swim a sub one hour Ironman. Only more of each..!!

So…..how fast you go is directly related to the amount of work you are willing to put in! You can no more “drill” your way to 1:00/100yds than you can “drill” your way to running a sub 3-4 hour marathon…!!

Is this a coaching problem..?? Yes and maybe No. Coaching is a two way street..!! We must be aware, but the athlete has to communicate as well. I truly feel like most coaches over train athletes to the point of hurting them. This is an example.

You should not add intensity before having a solid base of training to support that level of intensity.

However,

Once that foundation is in place, intensity is an absolute must.

Run training should be 80% aerobic and 20% very hard. Keep the easy, easy and the hard, hard. Training in the middle is unproductive. .

If your pool times don’t correlate to your open water times.....there is a reason..!! Everything feels good in the first 100-200 yards....then..well there is where the changes start to happen. You don’t need to train in open water, you need to train with more focus and intensity in the pool. Having problems....? Help is available.

Power meters are a wonderful “tool”, right up until you let IT decide if you will be able to perform a certain amount power over a given interval. The mind is a powerful tool...again....if you think you can’t....you never will.
