We are pleased to share a unique educational opportunity to view a series of video lectures by Paul on the four major riding schools of the world, their history and relevance. Each video comprises many hours of research and draws upon countless historical sources as well as Paul’s own experience.

These videos were previously only available for private viewing at our farm, and as part of our internship educational program. We are pleased to offer them online for the first time.

Additionally available now for streaming is Paul’s beautiful video The Lost Quixotes, which includes footage of his groundbreaking force-plate work with Dr. Hilary Clayton, demonstrations of exercises with his own horses, and a thought-provoking interview with a wild horse and horse behavior expert.

We were at a clinic recently and Paul's work in the early 2000's with Dr. Hilary Clayton came up in discussion. It became a great article in USDF Connection and of course the basis of his book, Search for Collection.

From Paul: Here we have one of our young horses in training learning some half steps. He is well conformed and it is relatively easy for him to do these steps. I want to be clear that it is not as though I am intent on teaching these younger horses to piaffe. What is important is that they learn how to use their hips, flexing at the lumbosacral joint, using their psoas and iliopsoas to come under. I watch carefully to make sure they don’t start deviating in the hind legs. If they widen slightly, this is not a problem, it only shows that they are trying to carry weight behind and are widening their stance like a weight lifter to accept the load. It is a real problem if they cramp up or narrowly step on their own feet or bring one foot in more than the other, etc.

Several of our interns have come to us with horses who were weak behind, had lameness issues, or needed to have joint injections to stay sound. We began early on with a program of teaching the interns how to work their horse in hand, to exercise the horse without any weight on its back and to learn the proper technique of engaging their hindquarters. In every instance, by the time their yearlong internship was up, their horses were sound and had not required additional injections. The horses were stronger, and the interns had much greater appreciation for when a horse lifts its back and collects. It wasn’t about teaching them to piaffe, it was about teaching them how a horse correctly sits.
