Before heading into the field on September 1, make sure your hunting license and required endorsements are up to date!

What You Need: All dove hunters need a valid Texas hunting license, a Migratory Game Bird Endorsement, and a free HIP Certification.

Buy Online: Visit TPWD Online License Sales or purchase through the Texas Hunt & Fish mobile app. Digital licenses can be stored directly on your phone.

Buy In Person: Available at approximately 1,700 retail locations statewide, including sporting goods stores, local bait shops, and TPWD offices.

100% of your license fees go directly to Texas conservation efforts, habitat management, and game warden operations.

Dove Numbers Reach Record Highs

Elevated rainfall in Texas has been a boon for doves. This is the third year in a row for record or near-record highs in their numbers, including the highest estimates ever for white-winged doves. This is not a season to sit out!

The South Zone experienced massive jumps in the number of both white-winged and mourning doves. This coincides with this season's historic Sept. 1 dove season start date for the South Zone – Special White Wing Dove Days and special bag limits are no longer necessary.

All zones open Sept. 1. The daily bag limit in all zones is 15, with no more than 2 white-tipped doves.

To hunt dove, you'll need a hunting license, a Migratory Game Bird Endorsement and free HIP certification. Anyone born after 9/1/71 must complete hunter education. Hunting season is right around the corner, and now is the perfect time to start preparing. Whether you’re a first-time hunter or returning for another year in the field, a little planning can go a long way toward ensuring a safe, enjoyable, and successful season.

Why Hunt?

Hunting provides meaningful opportunities to connect with nature, support conservation efforts, spend quality time outdoors, and harvest your own food. Many Texas hunters also enjoy the challenge, tradition, and sense of stewardship that comes with participating in regulated wildlife management.

Species of Opportunity in Texas

As you prepare, consider which species you’d like to pursue. Texas offers a variety of hunting opportunities, including:

White-tailed Deer
Dove
Duck
Turkey
Javelina
Non-game animals

Recommended Equipment Having the right equipment is essential for safety and success. Below are a few basic gear recommendations by species:

Deer Hunting

Rifle or bow
Ammunition or broadheads
Quality optics (binoculars, rangefinder)
Scent elimination spray
Durable, layered clothing appropriate for changing weather

Dove Hunting

12 or 20gauge shotgun
#7.5–9 target loads

Hunter Education
