The hardest tournament move isn't the cast — it's the decision to leave. And it's hard because most anglers never defined what "wrong" looks like before they started.

Decide your expectations before the first cast. Decide what would challenge your starting assumption. Decide where you test next — while you're calm, not when you're frustrated at 10 a.m. with nothing in the livewell.

That's a plan you can actually follow instead of a guess you're defending.

One last thought before I call it a night.

I love teaching people how to fish. I want Winner Watch to be a place where I can explain how I think through a lake, why I make certain decisions, and what I’ve learned from getting things wrong.

But I also want you all to know how I got here.

I’ve been a long way from where I wanted to be. I’ve sold equipment to pay bills. Right now I’m working delivery routes while trying to build my way back into tournament fishing.

Some of that story is hard to talk about. I’m going to share it anyway, because it’s part of me and part of why I’m building this.

I want Winner Watch to become proof that you can get a long way off your path and still work your way back. I’m still doing that work. You’ll get to see how it goes.

And along the way, I hope I can help you catch a few more fish.

If a fish follows your swim jig but won't eat it, you learned something.

There's a fish there, and your bait got its attention. That's worth another presentation.

On a pond, I might come back through with a drop shot or work a Texas-rigged craw around the cover. I'll also change my casting angle.

I'm not assuming every follower is catchable. But I'm not walking away without testing whether speed or presentation was the problem.

Watch what the fish tells you—even when you don't catch it.
