It's the time of year when you might be looking for summer camp or 'horse camp' for your kids.

These images are local. Even further, more than a few horses we've rehabbed and adopted have come from so-called 'camp' environments.

Learn what passive neglect looks like. Learn what maximizing profits by skimping on good care looks like.

A horse's spine should not be prominent. A visable rib or 2 is ok - especially in a horse prone to being overweight - but seeing multiple ribs or all of them is not. Hip bones should not protrude. Open sores where tack sits - especially across the withers or back - means tack does not fit. In the summer, coats should be shiny, not dull.

Each horse should have their own tack that fits. Each horse should receive food tailored to its specific needs; senior feed for seniors, for example. Hay and clean water should be available if the horses are not working.

Unfortunately, this is an area where 'the law' and reality do not intersect; if there is 'food, water, and shelter' on site, the law is on the side of the owner, not the horses. The best thing you can do is take your business elsewhere - and let your friends and family know why.

With the recent EHV-1 outbreak we are urging everyone to take immediate action with their Biosecurity!

Some things to keep in mind:
1. The virus can live for up to 7 days in the enviornment under normal circumstances, but can remain alive for a maximum of 1 month with perfect environmental conditions.
-disrupting that environment is key, clean everything!

2. EVH-1 can enter a latent state inside the horse’s body. Horses may carry the virus silently, without symptoms and shed it again when stressed
- when in doubt QUARANTINE!

Only we can help stop the spread.Stay home and stay safe, log everything, no one in and no one out 🐎

Vets are also extremely busy right now so please be patient with them and their response times with calls to farms as they navigate saving all these large animals that are coming up with symptoms by the droves ❤️

We have do not have any any horses here that are effected by this, but I am taking every precaution necessary during this time. Our first step in prevention here is making sure our herd is vaccinated yearly it has been expressed extensively that even vaccinated horses are contracting this agressive strain and so we are making sure all protocols are being followed at this time here at the barn

We have had our inbox full this week on questions about the future 2025 fun shows/all future events in our area here is our take on it:
While it saddens us deeply that a lot of our local barns that have for many years been able to provide all of these events and have now had to make the extremely tough decision to close their doors, we at Asgard Stables are going to exhaust all options to help fill in the large gaps these wonderful people have made, it is a tall order and we have some very big shoes to fill since our original plan was to board a medium size herd we have quickly surpassed that goal! I am overwhelmed most days with the outpouring of support from our community and the true trust everyone has given us at our establishment on not only providing quality care for their animals but believing in us with all of our dreams so we can make them a reality!
We feel it is our duty to the community now to show up as you all have for us and do our best to keep the opportunities for our current and future generations who also eat sleep and breathe in the Equine industry, please be patient for us while we wade through these last few months of 2024 and as soon as we have a plan in motion for 2025 we will let everyone know!
Thank you ALL for your continued support,
Kate Joslyn
