in 1911, Ronald Reagan, the 40th president of the United States was born. Toward the end of the 20th Century, the U.S. presidency took to the skies, and presidential travel by rail decreased.

Nevertheless, during President Reagan’s 1984 re-election campaign, he continued a tradition shared by Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, and Dwight D. Eisenhower by bringing the Ferdinand Magellan, the official presidential railcar, back into service for a series of whistle-stop speeches.

On October 12, 1984, approximately 100,000 people came to see President Reagan speak in Deshler, Ohio. This event would mark the last time that the Ferdinand Magellan was used in presidential service before going back into retirement at the Gold Coast Railroad Museum in Miami, Florida.
