What a pleasure it was to spend time with this Danish gem last weekend! Mathias is a CVI instructor and researcher Complete Vocal Institute. He hopped across the pond to give a series of lectures and workshops to CU Denver’s contemporary singers program regarding the science behind Complete Vocal Technique’s pedagogical method.

I had a great time providing Mathias with additional live sound examples for all the rough vocal effects, in addition to getting to watch him transform singers from apprehensive to elated during his one-on-one teaching sessions.

Y’all - this technique WORKS!

Rock on, Denver!!

We had the good fortune of connecting with Grace Woolf and we've shared our conversation below. Hi Grace, what do you attribute your success to? My motto and mantra throughout my career has always been “ain’t no such thing as can’t sing” - it’s been my lifelong mission as a voice coach to ...

It started in 2018 when I flew to Denmark from NYC to participate as a test singer at ‘s workshop. I was post abdominal surgery, and struggled with regaining control of my support muscles when singing. I came in open minded and excited. And I was NOT disappointed! 🤩 After receiving the love, care, and effective methods from my wonderful test teacher, I was able to overcome my muscle weakness and belt out my Janis Joplin song without pain, and with ease. Complete Vocal Technique (or CVT), had so many answers and pathways for me to choose from and was so logical and nerdy that I just knew I needed to enroll in the 3 year teachers program. With the focus on healthy singing without judgement of sound or artistry, I became a better singer, teacher, and person - learning to accept that journeys are meant to be long, and the process goes much faster when you take it one step at a time. I will be forever grateful for the time we spent together in Copenhagen, and the years we cried together as we pushed through our growing pains. The conclusion is: Anything is possible, the sky is the limit, and when you have the right tools and support (no pun intended) you can achieve ANYTHING! As I always say “Ain’t no such thing as cant sing” 😎🤘🏼

This is EXACTLY what I do during my non-teaching hours. Read scientific articles on REAL and OBJECTIVE definitions of the sounds we make with our voice!

Take this article, for example: the goal here is to define and refine the meaning of the sounds we refer to as “Belting”. You see, there are actually more then one gestures we can make in the vocal tract to produce a sound that many people would consider “belting” - to which the only accepted definition is “a loud and powerful sound”.

Exploring new ways to coin sounds so that they have their own sets of rules and limitations, actually gives us more freedom of expression because we know that there is MORE than one option, and more than one way to get louder sounds - especially in the higher end of the voice!

It’s extremely exciting to me to not only learn someone’s “method” or “technique”, but to also see the actual data in images and graphs is satisfying my nerdy needs 🤓

What phrases do you know of that use belting? Let me know down below 👇

The BIGGEST myth I’ve heard is that you have to be TALENTED and SKILLED in order to have the “right” to open your mouth and sing.

What?!

Singing is a form of communication and expression that we as humans have been using for THOUSANDS of years - I.e. Before reality TV ruined it for everyone 😂

In addition to that, SINGING has been scientifically proven to reduce levels of our stress hormone, Cortisol.

With everything going on in the world, we can ALL benefit from a little stress relief 😅

Whether it be while doing the dishes, going on a socially distanced walk, or in our happiest of singing spaces - the SHOWER 🧼 - TREAT YOURSELF AND SING! 🎤

What’s your current shower jam?

Mine has been “How Far I’ll Go” from Disney’s Moana.

Who of us hasn’t wanted to get those super powerful, extremely high and epic notes into our repertoire? This must be one of the MOST desired techniques my songbirds say they want to master. And most of them start off by saying “I don’t have these notes or power in my range” or “I’m an alto/bass/baritone/insert voice type here”. In short, they’re saying: I can’t do this.

Well guess what - I LOVE proving them WRONG! If you have a healthy set of lungs and a working larynx, you can achieve all the sounds the human voice can produce!

What’s the catch? You have to know what the STEPS of the process are, and then just GO SLOW and BUILD from there!

In this snippet, my lovely and incredibly quick learning songbird Athena approached this challenging section of chorus by ... And as you can plainly see/hear - she NAILED IT!

We started by establishing the right setting in the vocal tract for this desired sound with the correct vowels and support values, and then moving onto adding the lyrics.

If any of y’all want to challenge yourself like Athena did, don’t hesitate to DM/Email me and book a lesson.

Let’s make some killer music together :)
