Roger Mayweather, a two-division world champion and the uncle and longtime trainer of Floyd Mayweather Jr., was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1961.

He won his first title in 1983, stopping Sammy Serrano to claim the WBA super-featherweight belt in Puerto Rico. After two defences, he suffered his first loss in 1984 to Rocky Lockridge.

Mayweather challenged the great Julio Cesar Chavez for the WBC super-featherweight title in 1985 but was stopped in the second round. He regained a title in 1987, stopping Rene Arredondo to win the WBC super-lightweight crown, and defended it four times before losing to Chavez in 1989 via 10th-round stoppage.

A fixture in Southern California, Mayweather fought 11 times in Los Angeles, headlining cards at the Olympic Auditorium, Hollywood Palladium and Reseda Country Club.

The self-styled “Black Mamba,” he defeated former champion Vinny Pazienza and lost decisions to Hall of Famers Pernell Whitaker and Kostya Tszyu.

“One day when I was flipping through channels and I came upon this channel showing different reptiles, and they were showing the black mamba,” Mayweather said in 2006. “I loved the way the mamba attacked so quietly, but when he hit you he just hit you one time and the poison was in you. That reminded me of myself right there.”

Mayweather died in 2020 at 58 after a prolonged battle with diabetes.

“Even to the end, he was still a fighter, so he responded to that stimulus,” Top Rank Hall of Fame matchmaker Bruce Trampler said. “You know that song, ‘The Boxer,’ when they say ‘the fighter still remains?’ That was the last time I saw him, and I can tell you, the fighter still remained.”
