Runner’s Knee (PFPS) isn’t just about you anatomy, it’s a complex, multifactorial condition. 🏃♂️
If you’ve been told your knee hurts because your kneecap is “tracking funky” or because of “chondromalacia,” it’s time to update the narrative. Evidence shows that focusing on single anatomical factors (like VMO strength or X-ray alignment) often misses the bigger picture.
The Shift: We are moving away from old school anatomical myths and toward a systemic, load based model.
What’s really happening:
⚖️ The Envelope of Function: Your tissues have a specific load tolerance. When training intensity or mileage exceeds that capacity, pain often follows. It’s not about your anatomy; it’s about managing your load.
🧠 The Brain-Knee Connection: Persistent pain can lead to central sensitization, where the nervous system becomes hypersensitive to normal activities. This can progress to create kinesiophobia (fear of movement), leading to further stiffness and guarded movement patterns.
🌍 You Are More Than Your Knee: Systemic factors like poor sleep, stress, nutrition, and overall inflammation play a huge role in pain thresholds and tissue repair.
Runner’s knee is an ecosystem, not just a joint issue. It requires a multifaceted approach to management, not just a single exercise fix. We will explore this more in our next post.
