I was sitting in my Old Town Sportsman AutoPilot 120, letting the Minn Kota trolling motor hold me perfectly steady just off the main river current. When the daily grind of the concrete jungle gets to be too much, there is only one real escape for me. Loading up the kayak, turning off all notifications, and disappearing deep into the wild, winding river systems of the Midwest. I was working a beautiful, quiet stretch of water, casting a River2Sea Whopper Plopper 110 (Bluegill pattern) right up under some overhanging trees. It’s the absolute perfect ambush spot for a big river Smallmouth. The hypnotic, churning sound of that tail disrupting the surface is like a dinner bell. You watch. You hold your breath. You wait.

Suddenly, the water just erupted. A massive Smallmouth absolutely crushed the topwater bait. The fight was intense, raw, and heavy. I had her pinned, fighting through the current, bringing her right up to the side of the kayak. You can feel the victory. You reach for the net... and then, in one violent, slow-motion headshake, it’s all over.

The hook pulls. The lure flies into the air. Absolute silence. MISSION FAILED.

It’s the worst feeling in the world, but it’s also exactly why we keep coming back. The unpredictability, the wild nature of the river, and the respect for these incredible fish. There is absolutely no room for error, no deck to walk around on, and nowhere to hide when a fish this powerful decides to test every single piece of your gear. 🛶🔥

Out here on the Midwest river systems, the vibe is usually incredibly peaceful. It is just you, the Old Town AutoPilot 120 kayak, the sound of water flowing over rocky shoals, and the deep, untouched woods surrounding the banks. For me, kayak fishing isn't just a hobby; it is my ultimate way to escape the daily grind, explore the wilderness, and truly disconnect from the noise of the modern world. The fog was so thick I could barely see past the bow of my kayak. There is a specific kind of silence that hits the Illinois backwaters just before the sun breaks through the mist. No wind, no boat traffic, just the raw sound of nature waking up. This is the exact moment every bass angler dreams about, and when you are sitting inches off the water in a kayak, the anticipation is on another level. 🌫️🛶

When you are dealing with heavy morning fog and low-light conditions, bass rely heavily on their lateral lines to hunt. They need vibration and flash to track down a meal in the murky shallows. That is exactly why I had the Z-Man SlingBladeZ spinnerbait tied on, paired with a Strike King Rage Swimmer trailer. It is the ultimate search bait for these specific conditions. It displaces a massive amount of water, creating a heavy, thumping vibration that cuts right through the dark water and triggers pure reaction strikes from predatory fish hiding in the submerged timber.

I was slowly maneuvering the Old Town AutoPilot 120 parallel to a thick, submerged w**d line and some heavy laydowns. In these early morning scenarios, big largemouth bass pull up incredibly shallow to ambush baitfish. I pitched the spinnerbait past a prime piece of structure and started a slow, methodical retrieve.

Suddenly, the morning silence was absolutely shattered. BAM! 💥

The water erupted just a few feet from the kayak. There was no subtle tap—this huge Largemouth Bass completely inhaled the bait with pure, aggressive violence. The strike was instant, and the fish immediately breached the surface, violently thrashing its head from side to side in a desperate attempt to throw the heavy hardware.

Fighting a big fish from a seated position in a kayak is a completely different ballgame. You don't have the leverage you get on a bass boat deck. It is raw, up-close, and personal. The bass made a heavy surge, trying to dig deep back into the heavy cover to break my line. My Daiwa Zillion reel did exactly what it was built for—the drag slipped just enough to protect the setup while keeping maximum pressure on the fish. I kept the tip of my St. Croix Victory rod loaded, absorbing every single head shake and sudden dive.

After a short but incredibly intense battle, I gained the upper hand. When you are kayak fishing solo in the thick stuff, there is no net and no messing around. I kept the solid tension, locked it in, and hoisted this absolute river giant straight into the boat with the rod—a clean, old-school boat flip. 🎣

Getting a close look at a heavy, healthy Largemouth Bass like this makes every early morning wake-up call worth it.
