When physical education teachers Johann Gutsmuth and Friedrich Jahn invented the first gymnastics apparatus, they had no idea that they were setting the stage for the development of one of the most popular sports today. Jahn specifically invented the parallel bars, horizontal bars, beam, side and vaulting horse, and ladder.
