My Nephew brought some of Uncle J Rod’s baits all the way from South Louisiana to Central Arkansas! The Smallies did’t object to that Greggo Special with that Holy Trinity on it!🤣. Most importantly, he was able to Cast it! 🤔. He never got to meet my Dad “Greggo”, but I know he sure was grinning!

Improving Perfection

How does one go about improving perfection? Where does the audacity come from to believe that perfection can be improved?

Sit down for a moment, and let me see if I can put this journey into words.

I honestly don’t remember the first fish I ever caught. The reason is simple: most core childhood memories aren’t retained until around four years old. I was blessed with parents who had me on the water as soon as I could walk, so the memory of that first fish is lost somewhere in the fog of my earliest years.

What I do remember, however, is the first bait that consistently caught fish for me.

The Beetle Spin.

To this day, it remains one of the baits I lean on most when it comes to finding fish and covering water. It’s simple beyond measure, yet incredibly effective. In its purest form, it’s perfection.

Almost.

As I got older, I began experimenting with different presentations and learning little tricks that made me more successful. Even so, the Beetle Spin still had a few shortcomings.

As a kid, I fished with my dad. A lot.

I don’t remember a time when I wasn’t welcome on the back deck of his boat, unless I wasn’t doing my best in school or he was fishing a bass tournament. It was on the back of that boat where this idea was born.

Dad loved bass fishing, and so did I. But like most kids, I loved catching anything that would bite, and panfish were usually the ticket.

Anyone who knew my dad could tell you he had two favorite baits. One was a Tequila Sunrise worm. The other, and his absolute favorite, was a Lunker Lure buzzbait. I can still see him launching that buzzbait what seemed like half a mile with one of his old pistol-grip rods.

Meanwhile, I was in the back of the boat, chunking my Beetle Spin as hard as I could and never getting anywhere close to the structure he was fishing.

That was Imperfection #1.

They simply didn’t weigh enough to cast effectively at a distance.

Imperfection #2 was that if you chose a jig head heavy enough to throw, the hook was usually no smaller than a #2. For bream and other panfish with small mouths, that made it far less effective than it should have been.

Fast forward thirty years.

That little boy is now a grown man. Perch jerking is still one of his greatest passions, and the Beetle Spin is still a staple in his tackle box. Yet those same thoughts remained. How could it be improved?

The commercial options just didn’t check all the boxes.

So what does an inquiring mind do?

He builds his own.

It started with a handful of prototype round heads just to test the waters. The difference was immediately noticeable. From there, we took it a step further.

There have been mold modifications, countless hours of testing, and honestly, the testing still isn’t finished. But I couldn’t think of a better day than Father’s Day to make the announcement.

So here she is.

The Greggo Special

Named after my dad, this is the improvement to perfection that I’ve been chasing for years.

These custom-poured jig heads are built from our modified mold and offered in truly castable weights: 3/32, 1/8, 3/16, and 1/4 ounce. Each one is poured with a 2X #6 Victory V-Loc hook, giving anglers a smaller-profile hook that dramatically improves hookups on panfish while maintaining the strength needed for bigger fish.

Paired with our jig spinner and a variety of blade options, we’ve finally done it.

We’ve perfected perfection.

A jig-and-spinner combination you can actually cast a country mile and still catch fish with.

The Greggo Special will be offered in both a hand-tied hair jig version and a soft-plastic version in partnership with MAD Plastix, bringing their incredible color combinations to the table. Bare jig heads will also be available for anglers who want to build their own.

There’s still plenty of work to do, but I couldn’t think of a better day to introduce it than today.

Named after the Man.

The Myth.

The Legend.

My Dad.

This one’s for you, Old Man.

I miss you dearly, but I will forever be grateful for every minute I spent on the back of that boat with you.

And if I could have one thing, it would be to hear you say it just one more time:

“Dammit, Greg! Pay attention!”

Got a couple of new patterns in the works. These are 1/32nd or 1/24th ounce heads, poured with #8 Victory V Locs. I do believe they are going to put a whoopin on some bream! Ready to give them a try when the water goes down! May be Christmas before that happens!🤷🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️
