Men- a Guayabera shirt —also famously known as a "Cuban shirt"—is a lightweight, button-down summer shirt. It is widely celebrated across Latin America, the Caribbean, and Southeast Asia as a highly stylish alternative to a formal suit jacket or blazer in hot climates.
While the exact birthplace of the guayabera is passionately debated between Cuba and Mexico (with strong historical ties to traditional Filipino shirts like the barong tagalog), its most famous folk story comes from 18th-century Cuba.Legend says a poor country tailor's wife sewed large, extra pockets onto her husband's workspace shirts so he could easily gather wild guayabas (guavas) while out in the fields. The practical shirt caught on like wildfire with regional farmers (guayaberos) and eventually evolved from humble agricultural workwear into a formal garment beloved by world leaders and artists alike. In fact, in 1999, Cuba officially declared it their national costume.
To wear a guayabera correctly, follow these golden rules of tropical style:
Never Tuck It In: The straight bottom hem and side vents are explicitly engineered to look polished while hanging over your waistline. Letting it fly untucked maximizes circulation and airflow.
