On July 23, 2026 the Creature Craft family had a tragic accident that ended with Sara Bronson losing her life. This accident occurred during our annual "Guide School" event. We have been doing this event for the last 23 years and we are very familiar with this section of the river. We have literally run the upper five more the 3,000 times over the last 25 years, all without a single significant injury. What started out as a normal day on the Upper Five horribly changed when a boat pinned in Nutcracker Rapid. In an effort to prevent future accidents like this we took the time to gather all the facts. The following report was complied from eye witness testimony of 4 participants on river right, 4 participants on river left, still photos from river right and GoPro footage from inside the boat.
Abstract: On July 23, 2026, a "Creature Craft" vessel became pinned on rocks while navigating the Nutcracker rapid on the North Fork Payette River. Although the boat was initially in a stable position and the passengers were not in immediate life-threatening danger, the situation escalated after an improperly executed shore-based rope rescue. Bystanders on river right attached a rope to the front of the vessel and pulled, inadvertently shifting the boat into the main river current, where it became forcefully wedged against a rock and submerged. This trapped the passenger underwater, and despite intense physical interventions by the crew, the extreme force of the water prevented a timely release. An official after-action review identified the rescue attempt as poorly planned and lacking communication, noting that the decision to pull the boat into the current was the primary factor that turned a manageable situation into a tragedy.
General setting: This event happened during an annual get together of Creature Craft enthusiasts. There were 6 boats on the water that day in a variety of setups/configurations. There were 2 boats with two passengers side by side (R2), 1 boat with a solo oarsman and a backseat passenger(CP1), two boats with solo oarsman (R1), and one boat with a center oarsmen and two front seat paddlers (R3). As is typical on these river trips a boat order was established at the put-in and boat order was R2, R2, CP1, R3, R1, R1. The trip successfully navigated the first rapids (Steepness) and eddied out below. After a brief check in and gear adjustment, the trip then descended in order to the next rapid (Nutcracker). The following Incident Action Review begins at this time.
It should be noted that this is a defusal document. The document is intended to summarize the facts and establish a written timeline of events. The information in this document was compiled from eyewitness accounts of four persons from river right, the boat captain and passenger, the sweep boat captain and the lead boat captain as well as photos from river right and Go Pro footage from inside the pinned boat.

2. Operational Timeline (Chronological Log)
14:10 – Entry into Nutcracker: Vessel enters the top of Nutcracker rapid; water flow is 1,440 CFS, weather is sunny and 80°F, water is warm.
14:11:00 – Incident Trigger & Vessel Stuck on Rocks
Vessel flips onto its side above the most significant whitewater feature of the rapid.
Current carries Vessel directly into the left bank .
Vessel successfully re-rights as it comes into contact with rocks on river left shoreline.
Vessel becomes stuck in between left nut rock and rocks on river left.
Initially the vessel is somewhat unstable (rocking side to side) but completely above water level, no water flowing into the boat at all.
An effort is made by the crew to push with paddles and oars to free the vessel from its current position, with no success.

About a minute passes as the occupants shift their body weight back and forth in an effort to free the vessel from rocks, again with no change in vessel position.
14:13:00
Sweep vessel captain attempts to dislodge the stuck vessel by bumping it with the sweep vessel while navigating past.
Attempt to dislodge is unsuccessful, but causes the stuck vessel to move left approximately 3 feet and forward 4 feet putting the vessel directly on top of the ‘left nut’ rock. (see Image 1)
This changes the angle of the vessel and it begins taking on water.
At this point water is flowing through the vessel back to front and over the right bottom tube. (see Image 1)
Position details: Entire front of Vessel rests on top of the "Left Nut" rock and is above water level; back left corner rests securely on the boulders along the left shore. (see Image 1)
Vessel & Occupant Status: The Vessel remained above the surface of the water, with the river current flowing directly from the stern (back) of the boat toward the starboard bow (front right). The occupants were seated in waist-deep active moving water.
At this point the vessel is stuck in a very stable position and occupants are not in an immediate life threatening position.
14:14 – Rapid Escalation & Technical Rope Rescue Deployment:
A number of critical operational actions occurred simultaneously inside of a single minute.
A large group (8 to 10 individuals) of highly trained, expert Cat boaters and rafters happened to be scouting Nutcracker rapid on river right.
When Vessel became stuck the expert team on river right immediately grabbed their gear and began rescue operations.
Simultaneously the sweep boat captain navigated past the stuck vessel, eddied out approximately 50 yards downstream on river left and immediately began hiking upstream to provide assistance.
Meanwhile the Cat boaters on river right initiate a shore-based rope rescue, successfully throwing a rescue line across the river to the occupants of the stuck vessel.
The rescue rope was initially secured by the occupants to the starboard (right) side center oar tower. When the attempt to pull from the oar tower failed, the Cat boaters immediately gave verbal instructions to the stuck vessel's occupants to move the load line to the FRONT of the Vessel where it was attached to an inside front d-ring. (see Image 1)
14:15 – Sweep Arrival, Rope Tension, & Vessel Submersion:
The sweep boat captain arrives on scene on river left to begin direct technical assistance.
The crew on river right begins putting tension on the rescue line and pulling the rope.
The tension from the rope pull causes the vessel to destabilize and rapidly shift position, travelling approximately 3 feet toward river right and sliding off the rock into the main current, pivoting/turning its hull toward river right.
This critical change in hull angle causes the boat to directly catch the main force of the current.
This causes the vessel to submerge into the river and pin hard on the side of the rock that the vessel had been on top of seconds before. (see Image 2)
14:15:15 – Life-Threatening Entrapment Emergency:
The operational profile immediately shifts to a life-threatening emergency as the front right occupant of the boat is forcefully submerged underwater by the hydraulic force
The passenger positioned on the left side of the boat immediately makes attempts to release the seatbelt holding the submerged front right passenger.
The water level inside the hull is approximately 3.5 feet deep, moving with extreme velocity from the stern (back) to the bow (front), and cascading heavily over the front right passenger's seat. (see Image 2)
The boat captain unstraps from his own seat and begins immediate physical interventions to remove the seatbelt of the entrapped victim.
The crew on river right halts direct manual pulling on the line to begin rigging additional mechanical advantage systems to counter the immense water weight.
The boat captain maintained extraction efforts to release the submerged passenger's belt.
14:17 – Additional mechanical advantage introduction
The team on river right begins to set anchors and rig mechanical advantage systems to the line.
Additional tensioning on the load line moves the boat forward pulling the boat deeper into the current and increasing the submersion but does not free it from the submerged pin
14:18 – Secondary Rescuer Insertion:
The boat captain calls for assistance from the sweep boat captain stationed on the river left shoreline, and leaves the vessel in an attempt to push the vessel away from the left shoreline.
The sweep boat captain leaps from the shoreline onto the submerged vessel and instantly joins the physical extraction efforts.
14:19 – Seatbelt Release, Downstream Pursuit, & Secondary Swimmer:
Following intense physical intervention, the sweep boat captain successfully releases the victim's seatbelt, freeing the victim from the submerged pinning hazard. The victim was swept away from the boat and into the river by the force of the downstream current.
The sweep boat captain executes an emergency swim back to his vessel and immediately launches downriver to initiate a waterborne chase.
An additional rescue swimmer from the right bank deploys into the current but is unable to affect a rescue on the moving target.
14:21 – Interception & Multi-Crew Staging:
The lead boat captain was actively hiking upstream on river left (out of direct visual sight of the initial incident) to assist.
The lead boat captain spots the victim floating in the river with the sweep boat in active pursuit closely behind.
The lead boat captain leaps from the rocks on river left into the sweep boat as it bypasses his position, successfully joining the waterborne rescue effort.
14:22 – Downstream Recovery & Triage:
The victim is successfully retrieved from the river and brought onto the shore on river right, above Disneyland Rapid.
Rescuers immediately confirm a lack of pulse/respirations and CPR protocols are initiated.
911 calls had already been initiated by the group on river right, and members of the rafting group.
14:23 – Emergency Services Coordination:
An off-duty firefighter arrives on the scene to assist.
The victim is actively transported closer to Highway 55 and positioned onto a larger, more stable flat surface to optimize CPR efforts.
The off-duty firefighter leaves the immediate resuscitation area to actively coordinate and guide oncoming professional emergency services down into the river corridor.
14:29 – EMS Takeover:
Professional emergency services arrive on scene and take over all life-saving interventions and medical measures.
14:45 – Personnel Secured: All remaining group members and upstream crew personnel are successfully consolidated and secured safely to the staging/shore area.
15:00 – Boat Extraction & Downstream Departure:
The operational strategy shifts to gear extraction.
Decision is made to navigate the remaining functional vessels downstream to clear the canyon corridor and bring the gear to camp.
3. Performance Analysis
Tactical Successes:
Rapid response times.
There were no additional injuries incurred during rescue attempt
Tactical Failures:
The rescue plan initiated from river right was poorly thought out and initiated much too rapidly. The vessel became stuck at 14:11, river right crew had begun pulling on the front of the boat by 14:15.
No communication from the group on river right with the sweep boat captain on river left.
The rescue line from river right was incorrectly attached to the front of the vessel instead of the back. As a result of this incorrect positioning, the pulling from river right directly caused the vessel to shift directly into the current, resulting in the deadly submerged pin.
Involvement of outside entities affecting otherwise familiar rescue operations.
Occupants of the stuck vessel should have been removed prior to pulling on the rope.
Vessel captain did not have a knife on his person.
No communication between sweep boat captain and lead boat captain.
No clear Incident Commander on scene.
The highest qualified person on the trip was downstream of the emergency, not on scene. (Lead Boat Captain).
The second highest qualified person on the trip was rapidly on scene river left but the rope based rescue had already been initiated prior to his arrival.
4. Personnel Impact & Defusing Log
Physical Hazards Encountered: Continuous Class V whitewater, sieve/undercut risks, sharp roadside granite, steep embankment climbs, and vehicle traffic on Hwy 55.
Environmental Adjustments: Warm water and 80°F ambient air increased the risk of heat stress/exhaustion for shore personnel and technicians. Water level was lower than typical for the time of year.
Critical Stress Factors: Swift high-velocity entrapment risks, immediate proximity to downstream Class V rapids, and exhaustion.
On-Scene Defusing: Immediate debrief conducted at camp. Visual and verbal wellness checks completed for all technicians. Debrief continued at intervals for the following three days.
5. Corrective Action Plan
Equipment: Inspect all throw lines, carabiners, straps, rescue gear and the vessel hull used in the extraction for structural wear. Review PPE configurations for warm-water, high-ambient-heat swiftwater responses. Review operational protocols for boat timing/spacing in Continuous Class V whitewater. Add additional equipment to solve the communications problem from lead boat to sweep boat (waterproof radios).
Training: Schedule a training evolution focusing specifically on boat pins and boat removals within the Nutcracker/Hwy 55 corridor.
Mental Health Follow-up: Mandatory peer-support team check-in scheduled for all responding crew members within 72 hours of the July 23rd operation. This was conducted in camp on a peer to peer basis.
Image 1 Description - This picture was taken seconds before the front of the boat was pulled off the rock and into the current resulting in Image 2. As you can see the front of the boat is resting securely on top of the “Left Nut Rock”, the front end is approximately 2’ out of the water, and it is almost perfectly parallel to the current. In this position the boat is extremely stable and no one is in immediate life threatening danger. The bottom of the photo shows the three rescuers on river right preparing to pull on the rope. Notice the angle, the rescuers are upstream and across the river from the stuck boat. By pulling the front of the boat at this angle (with people still in the boat) the only likely outcome is what happened, a deadly submerged pin.
Image 2 Description: This image captures the position of the boat after rescuers on the riverbank pulled the boat off the rock and towards river right. By doing so, they inadvertently pivoted the boat perpendicular to the river's flow, forcing it directly into the full current. This caused the boat to become deeply pinned—a situation similar to a submerged kayak pin, where the occupant is trapped against the immense force of the water and unable to escape. In hindsight, this rescue attempt significantly worsened the situation, turning a stable, pinned boat into a life-threatening entanglement that made freeing the victim incredibly difficult.
Image 3 Description: This photo was taken about 2.5 hours post-incident during gear recovery. This shows how the boat was in a deeply submerged pin and was NOT moving without significant mechanical advantage systems. The necessary systems used to extract the boat included a 12k lb winch , two vehicles tied together, tree mounted anchor systems, ropes systems and shore-assisted physical intervention.
Image 4 Description: This photo was taken immediately after the boat was removed from the pin, notice the size and shape of the rock and how much of it is out of the water. The rock is large, approximately 6’ by 6’ and about 4’ out of the water. This is important because just prior to the rope pulling from the right, the whole front of the boat was resting securely on top of the rock, as seen in Image 1. This further illustrates that the boat was securely stuck on top of the rock and was extremely unlikely to move (especially to the right) without being pulled with a rope.
