A DISCUSSION OF HANDGUNS & AMMO FOR VARMINT HUNTING

Varmint hunting is the process of eliminating small, bothersome creatures like rats, mice, squirrels, gophers, and groundhogs. These animals may carry diseases that can infect humans and pets, as well as damage crops, gardens, and other property. Varmint hunting is therefore frequently regarded as a necessary activity for pest and land management.

There are a few important factors to take into account in choosing a gun and ammunition for varmint hunting. The handgun you select should be appropriate for the target animal. For instance, you would probably want a handgun with a high rate of fire if you are hunting small rodents like rats or mice.

If you are hunting larger prey such as groundhogs or gophers you will need a pistol with more strength and a higher caliber. Popular handgun calibers for small animals include the .22 LR, .17 HMR, and the larger .223 Re*****on. The higher velocity and precision of these rounds make them ideal for longer-range shooting of small, swiftly moving targets. These are fantastic options for people on a tight budget because they are far less expensive than .38, or .357 and larger calibers.

The choice between semi-auto handguns and revolvers is dependent upon personal preference and experience. Semi-automatic pistols offer a higher rate of fire and are generally more accurate than revolvers, making them a good choice for those who are looking to quickly take down multiple varmints. Revolvers, on the other hand, are generally more reliable and easier to maintain, making them an excellent choice for those new to handguns.

There are a few essential considerations to keep in mind while choosing ammunition for varmint hunting. The caliber you select should be appropriate for the target animal. As was already noted, varmint hunters frequently choose between the .22 LR, .17 HMR, and .223 Re*****on calibers, each of which has specific advantages and disadvantages.

The most popular caliber for small game hunting is the .22 LR, and for good reason. It is readily accessible, reasonably priced, and efficient against a variety of targets. It may not be appropriate for hunting larger animals like groundhogs or gophers because it is not as hard hitting as some of the other calibers on this list.

High-velocity, rimfire ammunition such as the .17 HMR is renowned for its precision and flat trajectory. It works well for longer-range varmint hunting and is especially effective against small, swiftly moving prey. However, it might not be as readily available and can be more expensive than .22 LR ammunition.

Some pistols can shoot the centerfire .223 Re*****on, which is frequently used in rifles. It is an effective caliber for hunting larger varmints like groundhogs or gophers since it is stronger than the .22 LR or .17 HMR. It is less suited though for novice shooters as is more expensive and produces more recoil than the other calibers discussed.

Can I Use 38 Special +P in my Revolver?

Yes, a 38 Special revolver can shoot 38 Special +P rounds. The "+P" designation indicates that the round is loaded to a higher pressure than standard 38 Special ammunition, but most 38 Special revolvers currently in production are designed to handle the increased pressure of +P rounds.

The main difference between 38 Special and 38 Special +P is the pressure at which the cartridges are loaded. 38 Special rounds are loaded to a maximum average pressure (MAP) of 17,000 pounds per square inch (psi), while 38 Special +P rounds are loaded to a MAP of 18,500 psi.

The 38 Special cartridge was developed in the late 19th century as a more powerful alternative to the earlier 38 Smith & Wesson cartridge. It was originally designed for use in revolvers and was introduced in 1898 by Smith & Wesson and the United States Army.

Given the higher pressures of 38 Special +P ammunition and the fact that revolvers chambered in 38 Special date back 120 years, the age of the specific firearm should be considered. Older revolvers or those with extensive wear and tear may not be the best candidates for 38 Special +P.

While a 38 Special revolver can shoot +P ammunition the increased pressure on the firearm may result in damage, especially on older revolvers and in some situations, this could pose a hazard to the shooter. Therefore, it is generally recommended that +P ammunition be used in revolvers rated for 38 Special +P (or +P+). When in doubt consult the owner's manual for your firearm to determine whether it is safe to use +P ammunition or consult a gunsmith or the manufacturer.

Ammo Storage Considerations: Safety, Reliability, & Duration

Ammunition storage questions typically focus on three common factors: safety, reliability, and duration. The bottom line is that ammunition, properly stored, is safe and performs reliably even if the storage period is extended over many years and even decades.

Storing ammunition, even large stockpiles, does not pose a significant safety risk purely from the presence and density of the stockpile. That said, it is ALWAYS recommended that ammunition be stored separately from fi****ms. Ammunition stores should be kept in a secure container and locked, especially if children are in the home or potentially have access to the storage location.

The “reliability” factor is a function of both the conditions in which ammunition is stored and the duration of storage. The primary enemy of stored ammunition is moisture. When ammunition is stored in an environment with high humidity the brass casing can oxidize. A greenish patina may appear on the exterior surface of the rounds. This tarnish does not impact performance or safety, but it may result in fouling of the barrel. Be sure to clean your firearm thoroughly after firing ammunition in this condition.

Schools of thought differ regarding storage of ammo in original cardboard boxes. The advantage of the original boxes is self-evident in that all the specifications and lot numbers are clearly identifiable. Regardless of original packaging, transference to plastic boxes or even vacuum sealed, all ammo intended for long term storage should be secured in an ammo case of some type.

Ammunition cases are typically plastic or metal and vary greatly in quality. The ammo case selected for storage should have an “o” ring type seal to keep moisture out. Silicone gel packs designed to absorb moisture should be placed in the case with the ammunition to further control the impact of humidity on the ammo.
