Geologic maps are pretty much what they say on the tin: maps detailing an area’s geological features, such as different types of rocks and sediments, their age, and how they’re distributed. They’re used in all sorts of ways, not just by geologists wanting to double-check how old a rock formation is, but also in understanding more about possible geological resources – like minerals – and natural hazards such as earthquakes.

That’s why making sure that they contain as much detail as they possibly can is so important – and the US Geological Survey (USGS) appears to have achieved that in its newly-released geologic map of the lower 48 states, dubbed The Cooperative National Geologic Map.

Cooperative is an appropriate name: creating such a detailed map required the help of multiple different sources, which provided over 100 preexisting geologic maps created by both the USGS and individual state geological surveys.

First tropical storm of 2026 could form next week

There is a 70 percent chance the Eastern Pacific Hurricane season will have an above-normal season, according to an outlook from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
The season's forecast is:
15 to 22 named storms
9 to 14 hurricanes
5 to 9 major hurricanes

The first tropical storm of the Eastern Pacific hurricane season could form as soon as the middle of next week.

Shark kills spearfisher in front of friends in Australia: "Terrifying thing to see"

The unidentified victim, a Cairns resident, was brought by boat around noon to the tourist town of Hull Heads where paramedics were waiting. He had "sustained injuries not compatible with life," an ambulance service statement said.
Kennedy Shoal is a shallow coral reef popular with recreational fishers. Divers are also attracted to the Lady Bowen, a 19th century shipwreck.

A spearfisher was killed on the Great Barrier Reef on Sunday in Australia's second fatal shark attack in just over a week, police said.
