A few years ago I bought four honeyberry bushes on a whim. No research. No real plan. I just thought they looked interesting.

Three survived. One apparently had other life goals.

This is the first year we've had enough berries to actually harvest, and I have to say, I'm impressed.

Honeyberries, also called haskaps, are native to cold regions like Siberia, northern Japan, and parts of northern Asia. They're incredibly hardy and one of the earliest fruits to ripen each year, which is a nice little reward after a long winter.

As for the taste? The best way I can describe it is a blueberry and an apple had a one night stand. Sweet, a little tangy, and just different enough that you keep reaching for another handful.

The kids absolutely love them.

The other day my husband and I stood back and watched them wander from bush to bush, picking berries and eating them as fast as they could. They looked like two tiny garden raccoons that had stumbled onto an all-you-can-eat buffet.

Honestly, I may have been doing the exact same thing.

Sometimes the best additions to the garden are the ones you buy simply because they looked interesting. These three bushes have definitely earned their keep.

Knocked out a bit of gardening this morning... and may have accidentally eaten a breakfast appetizer. Or ten.

One of my favorite parts of growing food is that moment when you pick something and eat it right there in the garden. No grocery bag. No refrigerator. Just a strawberry still warm from the morning sun.

I don't care how fancy a restaurant is—you just can't beat food that's been on the plant five seconds before it lands in your mouth.

Now if you'll excuse me, I should probably get back to weeding... assuming there are any strawberries left by the time I'm done. 🍓🌱

For the last week or so I've been hearing what I collectively refer to as "the bullfrog" out behind the house. Every evening I'd hear him singing away, but no matter how many times I looked, I couldn't find him.

The weird part? There's really no good froggy habitat back there. No pond. No marshy spots. No squishy mud. Just enough mystery to make me wonder where on earth he was hiding.

Turns out he wasn't hiding at all.

My youngest found the poor little guy today. Somehow he'd managed to fall into an empty 5-gallon bucket and couldn't get himself back out. He'd apparently been serenading us from the bottom of a bucket this whole time.

A quick rescue later, and he's back where he belongs in his natural habitat. Hopefully tonight's concert comes from somewhere a little more comfortable. 🐸

Moths get a bad rap, I think. Everybody goes on about how beautiful butterflies are, and don't get me wrong, they are. But have you ever really looked at some of the moths out there?

Take the hummingbird moth. Tiny little fuzzy thing, hovering from flower to flower like it forgot it's supposed to be a moth. The first time you see one, you swear it's some kind of miniature hummingbird.

Butterflies get all the publicity. Meanwhile, the moths are out here looking like flying teddy bears, pretending to be hummingbirds, and quietly going about their business.

I think it's time moths got a little more appreciation.

I'm a farmer who's allergic to pollen, which feels like a design flaw in the system.

For the last few weeks I've been a walking ball of sniffles, sneezes, and general misery. Every morning I head out to work in the garden, and every morning the pollen reminds me that it has a personal vendetta against my sinuses.

After a long day in the garden, there was absolutely no chance I was cooking. We'd already ordered pizza from the place in town before the rain started. About 20 minutes later, the skies opened up. So while we waited for dinner, my husband and I climbed into the back of my Jeep for a little micro date. Just sitting there listening to the rain on the roof, watching it come down, and enjoying a few quiet minutes together.

Bonus points: our friend was the delivery driver, so I got to see her too. Pizza, rain, and catching up with a friend? That's a pretty solid evening.

Then I looked up.

Check out all that pollen floating on the driveway.

I knew it was bad. My sinuses have been filing formal complaints for weeks. But seeing it all gathered together in one place really drives the point home. Apparently I've been living inside a giant cloud of plant reproduction.

After dinner, the youngest kiddo and I splashed around in puddles while we tucked the farm in for the evening. The animals were fed, the barn was closed up, and for a little while we got to enjoy being kids in the rain—well, one actual kid and one adult who still thinks puddles are fun.

Now we're inside for tick checks, hot showers, and dry clothes. After that? Maybe ice cream. The farm is tucked in, the rain is falling, and that sounds like a pretty good way to end the day.

And thanks to the pollen-covered driveway, I finally know exactly who's been trying to kill me all spring. 🤧🌧️🍕🍦🌾

Oh, Cheese and Wanda would like to say hi!

They'd also like snacks.

Not one snack.
Not two snacks.
Not three snacks in little blue stacks.

They'd like cookies.
They'd like grain.
They'd like treats when it might rain.

They'd like hay.
They'd like leaves.
They'd like anything the farmer weaves.

"Good day!" said Wanda.
"How do you do?"
"Have you brought snacks?"
"Perhaps a few?"

"Just checking," said Cheese,
with a hopeful grin.
"Maybe a bucket?
Or a whole feed bin?"

Now, I have learned,
as farmers do,
that goats have plans
for me and you.

Their plans are simple.
Their plans are clear.
They mostly involve
snacks appearing here.

So if you stop by,
don't be surprised
if two floppy-eared snack inspectors
have you thoroughly analyzed.

Cheese and Wanda say hello.

And also...

Do you have snacks?
