Lead Valley Range is family owned and veteran owned by veterans from the Viet Nam and Desert Storm Wars. We decided to build a range that would cover all disciplines of the shooting sports: pistol, shotgun, and rifle and all aspects of competitions. We also wanted it to be family friendly and an environment for learning and fun for all levels of shooters. To make this come true, we had to make sur
e that we would have one of the best facilities in the state and all the surrounding states and the most comprehensive range. To accomplish this we got the best information possible by going to the NRA Range Conferences and getting the top experts from the National Rifle Association (NRA) and the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) to work with us in the fields of design, lead management and operations. This told us that the range needed to be less than an hour from Denver and on a major highway with no chance of encroachment for a very long time. We also knew that we would have to have a top ranked staff to make all of this happen so we got the best training possible from the NRA and the NSSF. What this relates to is anyone who wears a staff shirt is a certified instructor certified Range Safety Officer by the NRA and most have combat medical training or other medical training. One of the owners is a Range Technical Team Advisor for the NRA. This entails him going out and solving problems that ranges have on behalf of the NRA. This will be our continuing goal. The range itself occupies about 15 acres but is laid out on over 460 acres of total land. This gives us a great advantage over any encroachment by development that could have a negative effect on our operation. When the range is finished we will have 12 private berms, a 50 yard range with 11 stations, a 100 yard range with 20 stations, and a 500 yard range with 5 stations, 7 Trap fields, 2 5-Stand Sporting fields, a 24-station Sporting Clays field and an Archery Range with 21 stations. This project will be built out over a number of years. The speed by which it will be done and in what order will be determined by the membership’s needs. Range Types:
50 Yard Range
This is a standard 50 yard range with 11 stations. Each station has a shooting bench and a stool on a set firing line. All targets will be set at 50 yards or 25 yards with those on the 25 yard line being at least forty two inches from ground to the bottom of target. This range will be for pistol and most rifles. In the future we will add overhead cover for the firing line.at least forty two inches from ground to the bottom of target. In the future we will add overhead cover for the firing line.
100 Yard Range
The 100 yard range is used forzeroing scopes, test firing ammo and general practice. This range has 20 stations with benches and stools for just that purpose. All targets will be set only at the 100 yard distance. Members may shoot from any standard shooting position. We will add shade covering to this range in the future.
500 Yard Range
This range is only for those of you who have a lot of patience. There will be five stations on this range with a set firing line with benches and ground firing positions. We will set two intermediate distances on this one. In the future, we are planning to put two lanes of military style silhouette pop ups on this range. This range is currently under construction and will be available for use when finished. Private Berms
This set of berms is a little different than what most shooters have used or seen on other ranges. The private berms come in two sizes. One is 30 feet wide by 130 feet deep and the other is about 16 feet wide by 130 feet deep. There will be 12 total when the range is finished. Each berm will have a 20 foot back stop and walls on each side of 8 feet in height. Each one will have a large table, a bench and a stool which the member can move to where they want and leave them there. All type of targets can be shot here but no glass, explosives or incendiary’s of any kind. The 30 foot range can be used for a variety of action shooting competitions. All of these berms can be used by any member during hours of operation to shoot pistol, rifle, and shotgun. When a member enters a berm they will be in control of that berm and only they will be shooting on it. They will raise the flag and set their targets to the back stop and then walk back from the target to the distance that they wish to shoot. This type of berm is like shooting in your own back yard. Trap Fields
The trap fields are laid out to ATA specifications to comply with all ATA competitions. They are set on a small arc to concentrate the shot fall zone to a smaller area thereby making lead recovery easier and more efficient. We will install the traps as needed by the membership. Therefore, we have started with one trap and will add more as the need arises. We have the ability to have a total of seven traps. Our idea is to make the range friendly to instruction and to competitive shooters. This will be done by our instructors and the fact that we are willing to set traps for any special problem that a competitor may have the need to practice. Trap is a game that is shot with shotguns using clay pigeons as targets. A trapshooting round is normally made up of 25 birds or 25 pairs in the case of a doubles round. The birds are thrown at various angles anywhere within the 44 degrees field. The shooter does not know what the angle will be. There are three types of trapshooting: 16 yard singles, handicap, and doubles. In a 25 bird “singles” round, the shooter fires at five targets from each position before moving to the next. This game, like all our shotgun games, is open to the public on weekends.
5-Stand
This is a game that consists of targets shot in 25 bird increments from five shooting stands (five shots from each stand) with each shooter rotating from station to station. The game offers several different skill levels and utilizes six or eight automatic traps to simulate game type targets. Targets are released to a predetermined set sequence marked on a menu card in front of each shooting stand. The first 5-Stand is open twelve months a year. We will build the second 5-Stand as needed. This game, like all our shotgun games, is open to the public on weekends. Sporting Clays
This game is also shot with a shotgun and is shot over a number of different stations that are set apart normally by more than 15 yards and connected by a trail. This is to lend to the feeling of being out on the hunt. The birds that are thrown should simulate the flight of a bird or other animal while on the hunt. This is done with one or two traps per station and throwing the birds in either singles or in pairs. The pairs can be in report, following or true pair. When the range is complete, we plan to have 24 stations on the Sporting Clays range or two fields of 12 stations each. We have started this range with only ten stations at first and continue to expand till we reach the maximum stations that are planned. We plan to have carts to rent. The speed at which this will be accomplished will be controlled by the demand of the membership. Pro Shop
We have a Pro Shop open at present time until we can build a permanent clubhouse that will house a much larger permanent Pro Shop. You will find that our pricing will beat the big box stores and competes with Walmart. We can accomplish this because we do not have the overhead the large retail stores have and we buy only direct from the manufacturers, keeping our cost down. Archery Range
This range has 21 shooting positions on
it with 21 target stands ranging from 10 yard to 100 yards in 10 yard increments. The most used distances have multiple stands (up to four). Each shooting position has a bow hanger, back tables and a quiver. We have back stops which make it easier to find your arrows. You can only use target tipped arrows.
