Shield-Maidens/ Iowa Phoenix vs Winona State Women’s Rugby game recap:
(Written by Amanda Streeper)
The Shield-Maidens teamed up with the Iowa Phoenix on Saturday to take on a well-disciplined and athletic Winona state women’s rugby team, who have experienced a high level of success on the pitch, blowing out many opponents by double or triple digits. Winona’s team boasted an experienced back line with an inside center who had a quick boot and a group of hard-crashing forwards. Winona state used their speed on the outside and their ability to kick and chase as their main weapons against the Shield-Maidens/Phoenix, but the combined Iowa senior womens side responded with experience, ferocity, and athleticism that made for an excellent game. The forwards leaned on the knowledge and leadership of the phenomenal K Drey Haslemore while the composure and finesse of Sheree Haslemore at flyhalf made the Shield-Maiden/Phoenix combined backline click. The Shield-Maiden/Phoenix cohesiveness led to four trys on the day led by the unstoppable flanker Mandi Jean Bailey, whose strong running led to 3 break-away trys including one almost the entire length of the field. Bailey was also instrumental in a score by Amanda Streeper on a try line push within the five that was opened up by a great run from Sheree Haslemore. Honorable mention for the day goes to Tori Ni**od for her excellent support as wing that led to some fantastic runs, as well as her sheer grit on the defensive end chasing down more than one break-away Winona State runner to show off her open-field tackling ability. In the end, Winona State’s ability to capitalize on the outside as well as a their ability to gain field position through chip kicks eventually led to their victory. Although Winona State came out on top, the Shield-Maiden/ Phoenix team have much to be proud of, being respectably competitive opponents for the seemingly insurmountable Winona State. Best of luck to Winona State in their quest for gold as they make their way through the collegiate playoffs. Many thanks to Winona State, Iowa Phoenix and Des Moines women’s rugby clubs for traveling to NE IA, and Adam Simiele for his coaching wisdom and Matt Simon for his reffing and never-ending passion.
Cheers Shield-Maidens on a great 1st season you made your Barbarian Rugby Brothers VERY proud! Excited for the years of our club ahead!!!
