Flying Dragon Disc Golf Course

Flying Dragon Disc Golf Course The course is scheduled to be finished in the Summer of 2017. If you'd like to help, please contact

The Disc Golf Course begins with fairways cut through cedar and hickory, but watch out for the 'Flying Dragon' thorn bush, for which the course is named, lurking in the brush. Hole #3 introduces you to the first hanging basket, suspended above large boulders, as well as the first of many fern-draped old hickories. The hard-edged fairway of rough, rock-strewn Hole 11, the longest of the course, cha

nges suddenly as number 12 delves into moss and fern covered boulders. 14 begins on top of a large flat rock, then passes by one small sinkhole before ending in the center of a slightly larger one. 18's fairway is a beautifully manicured bermuda lawn contrasted by arguably the roughest pile of bulldozed boulders you've ever seen on the left and an Out of Bounds gravel parking lot on the right.

You are invited to the first ever C-Tier tournament held at The Flying Dragon Disc Golf Course!
This course was established in 2012 by Tim Mitchell and Steve Wicker and has served the Decatur disc golf community well. Over the last 13 years, the course has gone through many changes, going from an 6 to 8 to 12 to 19 to a now fully renovated 18-hole course. About 2 years ago, with the help of Stephen Pirkle, State Senator Arthur Orr, Lavone Wolfe (Hall of Fame Disc Golf Course Design), and the City of Decatur, they began the process of funding and renovating this course to meet the needs of the growing disc golf community in North Alabama. Among the changes are brand-new concrete tee pads, refreshed Disc Catcher baskets, updated singage, benches at every hole, and the course is 100% cart friendly with crushed rock paths throughout!
We would be so grateful to have you here with us, to begin a new chapter, to embark on a new challenge, to "Tame the Dragon"!
Hosted by Flying Dragon DGC
PDGA sanctioned C-Tier Tournament, 2 rounds, 18 holes per round
Players' pack: 1 (one) "Tame the Dragon" stamped Discraft disc; Zone, Buzz, or Thrasher.
Trophies for 1st place in each Amatur Division, Pro divisions will also receive a trophy along with payout

I received an email from Decatur Parks & Rec maintenance department. Starting Monday September 8th there will be a tree company working on tree removal throughout the Flying Dragon Disc Gold Course mainly holes 10-18. The course will need to be closed to eliminate all foot traffic while this work is going on. Once the work is complete, and I have been given the word to reopen the course, I will let you know. The course will be closed for tree removal until further notice.

Thank you,
Cody Wells

Yesterday I was able to get Holes 14,15, & 16 fairways and pin locations cleaned up real nice. I trimmed back A LOT of overgrown growth and cut down a few small trees & bushes to make them more appealing esthetically and easier to navigate. While I know there's enough work to do for a whole month, this is the best the Flying Dragon has looked in a long time! Within the next 2 weeks we'll be busting up "some" of the old teepads to make them more smooth minus the divets, dips, and humps. If and when you play the Flying Dragon and you use your uDisc scoring app, please leave us a review (good or bad) to let us know if the work we're putting in is makes a difference.
Thanks!
-Brandon

I've been doing some course maintenance at The Flying Dragon Disc Golf Course over the last couple of weeks. I've spent a lot of time blowing away leaves and debris creating destinguishable fairways to every basket. I cleared off all teepads and walkways from each basket to the next teepad as well. I was able to knockdown weeds from several areas and fairways, but especially on 11a fairway and 16 fairway and C1 around the basket. It's a far cry from what we need to do to make this course complete, but it's a start in the right direction. I hope you enjoy The Flying Dragon!!
Photos to come later.

Over the last week we've finally had some free time to get some tee pads and walking trails cleared out. When using a leaf blower and a rake it turns out there are some beautiful flat rocks and hedge stones, covered up by 10 years of dead leaves, that make for great natural sidewalks. Holes 1 - 8 tees are looking much better. With the help of Billy Turnbull, Steve Wicker, and a few others, we've been able to put out lots of mulch on various hole. #2 basket has a good 10ft circle. #7 has a new alt tee box area outlined with wood and mulch along with lots of mulch all around and under the hanging basket where it's always muddy. tee box has been re-outlined with wood and fresh mulch. #12 the fairway has been mulches along with around the basket. #15 has the most work done with a whole truck load of mulch dumped to make it easier to walk on.
While these few minor improvements are great, we still have lots of work to do clearing out undergrowth, fallen branches and trees, leaves, and cutting back over hanging branches on most every fairway. There are still plans on clearing out paths for alternate pin locations for several holes as well. With your patience and participation, these goals can be completed by the summer as something we can all enjoy and be proud of, and have hopes of hosting a tournament by fall as well.

Flying Dragon work day scheduled for tomorrow April 8th, will most likely have to be rescheduled due to weather. We probably can't get much work done with the amount of rain we've received the last few days.
