If you see these early signs on your boat, we’re sorry to have to tell you what is ahead 😅. No offense is meant by saying “quick” bottom job, but when you realize the issue we’re dealing with, it will put this project into perspective . Gel coat is a specialized resin that gives a hard, protective, and glossy finish to the topside of the hull. Grinding all of it off of a 55ft boat is no easy (or quick) task.

This rule ISN’T just for those with trust issues 😅 This is about safety & ensuring a backup plan that you are in control of. Typically, you’ll need to be winched up manually by a crew member on deck. By getting a belay device, that decent is not longer dependent on who is still down on the bottom, and better yet, not dependent on the functionality of your ONE halyard. 2 not 1 is the rule!

The two types of rigging we need to know about BEFORE stepping aboard: standing vs running. It almost feels like a trick question, but the large metal boom is indeed categorized as “running” rigging, and therefore moves while under sail. Be careful which you choose to stabilize yourself, it could mean the difference between staying aboard or not.
